Having just had mine die on me I was wondering what the average age of a battery is before it needs replacing?

Mine lasted 9 years which I don't think is too bad for an OEM battery. At what age of car have you had to replace the standard battery?

Average life is 5 years but this can go down to two years depending on quality and what extra toys you have in the car.

Had my battery die last summer 2008, original BMW date stamped 03/1997, 11/12yrs old and still holds a charge for testing things in my garage, I just give it a charge every 3 months which takes 3 minutes,it will still start the car but with all the gadgets in the car it finds it hard to cope.

So I thought if they last that long I will buy the replacement from BMW £138.98+vat fitted with 2 year warranty....Halfords wanted £112.00,fitting extra, but I wasnt going down the Halfords route after seeing how long the BM lasted.

I don't rate Halfords batterys, I bought one recently & It died in a day. I got my money back & bought a Lucas one from a proper battery specialist, turned out to be 10 pounds cheaper. :amuse:
The only car I've kept for a long period was my Smart & I had that for 6 ish years from new & I never needed to change the battery.

never buy a vietnamese car battery - 6 months thats it. the Musso has had 5 so far, they are crap. It may run two amps but music is never very loud and sya used max 1 hour a day, if that, and only when we are driving.

Do you find the extra heavy duty batteries that are available have longer overall lives or just hold a much better cranking amp?

A heavy duty battery should last longer. I would check out the alternator though. It could be either under or overcharging the battery which can cause premature failure. 6 months just doesn't even seem possible for a battery. Do you get a years warranty over there?

believe me batteries over here are not good, locally made. for a battery the warranty is 1 week - thats it no joke. For electircal applicances, TV's etc.. the warranty is only 1 month. You cannot get any longer and if it breaks shortly after they just ignore your complaint.
