Hi all,

Well this is something I have wanted to be part of for a long time. I love the look of modified cars and how they all stand out!

I am about to turn 17 and will be looking for my first car, so any tips on what car to get, and modifications that I can do without it making a massive dent in my insurance!

Finding out what all of you had for your first cars and what you did to them aswell would be a great help!

Any advice on anything from what car, insurance companies to where to get parts and how/where to fit them would be great!

Thanks alot,

Choness2004.

Hi Choness2004 and welcome to TorqueCars, good to have you with us. First up I would recommend you get some insurance quotes, you'll then realise that it is going to cost a lot of money to have anything with a slight amount of performance.

This limits you to small engined cars. I would recommend sticking with a small, cheap and old 1.0 car for a year. Then when you turn 18 and have your 30 no claims discount there are lots more opportunities open to you.

You still want a fun car so I'd look at something small and light like a Yaris, Saxo, Corsa, 106 and the Ka. Spend money on a decent ICE install and save up your money to mod your second car.

I had a Renault 9 1.3 TLE as my first car, fully serviced it bought mats etc and then crashed it within a couple of weeks. After that I have some 1.3 Nova's which were fun to drive but I did work in an insurance brokers office so I got a pretty good deal on that!

hey and welcome.

my 1st car was a fiesta 1.1. only mods to it were EL wire around the gear stick and the CD player.

2nd car was a 1.4 civic £900 to insure, my name with mum added as a named driver, added a set of 15" wheels and watched £400 get added to the premium. the wheels cost me £240 ( needed a set sharpish after a slight accident and 3 wreaked alloys )

best idea would be like waynne said get a old banger and run it 3rd party for a year and dont crash.

Depends how much money you have really doesn't it. There's a 17yo kid round here with a Glanza as his first car! One of my mates had a Vti Civic as his first car too.

Well I will have around £500 - £600, maybe more if needs be.

This money also excludes insurance (otherwise I wouldn't be going anywhere!)

What do you think about getting a Saxo? They seem to be popular around my way and I didn't know if it was because they are cheap on ensurance or because they are great little cars that are good to keep hold of and mod.

mate imo saxos are great cars the 1.1, 1.4 and the 1.5d are really slow cars but when lowered can out handle much more expensive/powerful cars! the boot is a good size if you want to do an install and there are shed loads of spares and styling parts for them so they are easy to modify!!

 That sounds really good... any catch?

Well I did a search on a 1.1L Saxo and on Compare the Meerkat it said it would cost me £1400 a year.

Isn't Adrian Flux good for young drivers and modified cars?

i went with liverpool victoria but theres loads of factors like where you live and how popular the car is with thiefs, saftey rating airbags ect ect
