1996 Accord Coupe
Hey, I found this forum and it seems like there is a wealth of info here so thought I would join.

I drive a 5th Gen Honda Accord Coupe 2.2i ES, Championship White, completely stock at the moment.

Well, the previous tit of an owner stuck TypeR badges on it, so not completely stock. (They will be removed as soon as I buy some sticky stuff remover)

Sadly the TypeR wannabe drove the car into the ground so it needs some love. Gonna restore it to factory and then start playing with it.

I think once the car is healthy again, either Tein or H&R coilovers will be going on and then a factory colour respray (as there are little rust patches/dings/scratches etc)

I'm going to start collecting bits to boost it, but that is the long term plan, as I need to research it a little better. There are plenty of stock F series engines running as much as 400whp but I''ll probably end up replacing the internals to make it as reliable as possible for daily driving.

As soon as I've got my 10 posts I'll post some pictures.

Mate if the badges are stick on then all you need is a hair dryer. But don't heat them up too much as it will damage the paint.
Hello and welcome to Torque Cars.

Thanks for the tip, but a hairdryer hmm, don't own one. lol

As for damaging the paint, not too worried, it needs a complete respray.

Rear arches there is surface rust, scratches on front and rear bumpers, and bubbling on the boot where it either wasn't prepped properly or rust is forming under the paint.

I might just get a stanley knife and try to slice it off.

The rear number plate recess is covered in the remnants of sticky tape too so I need to get that off as well. The previous owner stuck some Welsh plates on it and made a right mess of things.

I've seen ripped them off and screwed in some new plates but I'll need to clean it up at some point as it'll just bug me.

Park the car with the sun shining directly onto the badge you want to remove. Wait half an hour or so and then have a go. I did this on my Primera and they came off real easy. Then all I did was rub of the remaining bits of glue with my fingers.

dental floss or thread might work as well. slide it in behind and "saw" the sticky stuff off.
i just grabbed mine with a pair of pilers and getle twisted both ways until it searted to come off. rubbed of the rest of the glue and then some polish to hide the marks where they were

Hi and welcome. It sounds like your car is going to keep you busy. I hope you got a very good deal on it.

Aye £475, which considering the MOT and Tax had 2months to go and there is a list of things to do to get it sweet, it wasn't a bad deal.

Booked for the garage on Wednesday and have priced up some bits from Japarts. I reckon it'll be upto but no more than £450 to get it back to normal. However if the clutch is fine and just the pads and not the front discs need doing then even less. Then again, these are cheap OEM parts, the mechanic can no doubt get bits much cheaper.

I hope I'm just being paranoid and there isn't a lot wrong with it. Just terrified there is going to be some large, unseen issue which I can't afford to fix right away :(

Ah well fingers crossed.

I haven't budgeted for tyres this month. I don't wanna spend £150-£200 on some budget muck som gonna wait on them.

I've also started asking around about good sprayers and the founder of my old car club seems to know a good guy so looks like that is taken care of. I'll rest a little easier once the dreaded rust is gone.

Anyway I'll post some pics in 3 more posts.

I wish I had an update for you but sadly I'm still waiting on the mechanic to come pick the car up from my work and sort it.

He was meant to come yesterday but had a backlog.

Any other time I would take it somewhere else but he is the cousin of my boss so I'll get mates rates and also if it fails emissions it uuum... well let's just say it won't be an issue.

So I'm still waiting. Have I got 10 posts yet? Want to post some pics for you.

Your at 8 posts mate. Just 2 more. Have a look in the polls section and post up a couple of replies.

Make this number 9.

Check back this evening, I'll post them up when I get home. Supposed to be filechecking here at work in readiness for an audit. *groan*

Ok so here it is. I took these about 4 days after buying the car so it is pre-valet and pre-gunked engine.

rsz032.jpg

Note the red Honda badge. It doesn't look like the original has been swapped but there aren't any TypeR Accords this early so I guess it must have been. Ignore the red circle, I was highlighting areas for attention to remind myself. This is a rust spot *shakes fist*

rsz057.jpg

If you are familiar with 5th gens you'll notice I ripped the number plate mounting off. The plate looks a lot more flush with the bumper now.

rsz028.jpg

Note the fake TypeR stickers. Another painful reminder of the car's history and how it was treated. The bump strips will be removed and am thinking about refurbing the honda wheels in white until I can afford some Volks or Ultralites.

rsz040.jpg

I'm going to remove the foglight and smooth the gap (assuming I don't replace the bumper) and turn the spoiler brake light into the rear fog. I haven't decided whether to go for a single 3" backbox or a similar box to the stock one as the dualpipe looks nice if slightly bigger.

rsz1046.jpg

Patches of rust. This is the most noticeable but it is evident underneath the rubber strip lining the rear arches so this is a priority. I read about a company in Sunderland (in an old Max Power mag) called 'Car & Bike Magic' who can remove scratches, rust, dents etc without the need for a respray so am currently trying to find a similar company close by (Staffordshire).

rsz049.jpg

Finally the F22B5. Mucky as hell, caked in oil. It has since been gunked by me (unsuccessfully) and steam cleaned professionally so looks much better now. I'll put new pics up when I get round to it. My plans for this in the beginning is a battery relocate, ABS/AC delete and a wire tuck, and will try and source a different head which flows better (good for boosting). I think it's the F22B3 or something like that.

I have eyed a tasty Wings West Lip kit and have also sourced some cheap bits on an american site, so gonna find out how much the customs charges will hit me as there is a ton of bits I want to get.

First things first though, get this bloody MOT out the way, whenever the mechanic gets round to doing it.

All comments welcome.

customs should it you with the vat rate of 15%. try and ask the company to send it out as a gift rather than a purchase. you wont have to pay the tax if its value is less than £135.

Has the engine been on fire ?
dont like the look of that burnt patch around the exhaust manifold

Aye I wasn't too jazzed about it when I first saw it, but like I said, it's been thrashed and I paid an appropriate price.

Exhaust manifold and head are both coming off though, along with that heavy manifold cover, so I'll be able to see the extent of damage properly.

I'll have it sweet as a nut, don't you worry.

Have fun getting the manifold and cover off.
my preludes took 2 cans of plus gas ( WD40 more or less ) to get the them off. ended up spraying lossing a bit, spraying again, tightening up then loosining again.
your tight about it weighing a ton

I know aye, fun! My last Accord, the manifold was rusted really badly, was a nightmare.

This doesn't look to be corroded at all, but no doubt I'll be kicking it and screaming at it within minutes of getting my tools out.

Any idea what a H22 swap goes for and where I can get it done?

If it is a total mess inside I might just keep it running until I can afford to dump the prelude lump in it.

We had a member do the 2.2 swap into a Civic - see if you can find his thread as he covered a lot of the problems in that.

A bit late but nevermind! Welcome to the forum mate!

I hate it when people put Type R stuff on a non-Type R! The H22A swap should be relatively straight forward as the H22 A was actually used in the Accord at one stage (we had it in the UK from 1998 in the Accord Type R). The swap into your Accord should actually be easier than the swap mentioned by waynne above into a Civic. The problems he encountered were because the H22A doesn't drop straight into a Civic. Instead of thinking engine you need to be thinking brakes and suspension first mate. Another quick note, if you want a respray and want to keep it white... go for 'Premium Pearl White'. It's from an S2000 and looks the mut's nuts!

Hey Prince,

The H22A swap won't be for a while, I just wanted to call a couple places and get an idea of cost so I can set a goal for myself.

Brakes are a priority, especially after spending Monday afternoon tearing up the back roads in a Lotus Elise, I realised how awful my brakes are.

From Japparts, a pair of OEM vented front blanks are roughly £135. I found last night a pair of Black Diamond Grooved and Drilled Vented Discs are about £165 so I might upgrade if they fail MOT, which I now have booked for Saturday morning at my local garage, as the mechanic I mentioned previously has still not contacted me about when he can check the car over. I got tired of waiting.

If anyone knows the score with rotor over hub conversions and whether it is a worthwhile mod, please let me know. I've gathered that it is only beneficial as it makes brake maintenance easier but it seems a popular mod with the Accord crowd. *shrugs*

MOT results

Well I got my MOT results today and they aren't as bad as I was anticipating.

Here goes:

OS Front position lamp not working (Knew that already)
NS Front headlamp when dipped not working (Knew that already)
OS Rear fog lamp not working (Wasn't aware of this but not a big issue.)

I've bought some new Phillips H4's for the headlamps and a standard plug in light for the corner for now, but unfortunately I can't fit them myself as it requires removing the battery and coolant reservoir for the NS lamp and the OS isn't much easier and my mechanically minded friend is working abroad at present so I guess I'll have to add it to next week's labour costs.

The more major fails are as follows:

NS & OS rear brake pipes are excessively corroded and I won't find out the cost of these until Monday although the mechanic seems to think it will be more labour than parts which will hurt my wallet.

Finally the NS & OS rear trailing arm rubber bushes are deteriorated resulting in excessive movement. The mechanic seems to think it might be better to just replace the trailing arms but I'm gonna ring round a few places and get quotes for just the bushes first.

That's it as far as fails are concerned. I had a couple things to watch though....

NS & OS front anti-roll bar linkage rubber bushes are deteriorated but not resulting in excessive movement.

Front and Rear brake discs are pitted (Figured this but hoping to upgrade soon)

NS & OS front constant velocity joint gaiters deteriorated (Gonna try and replace these as soon as possible)

and finally the NS & OS suspension joint upper dust covers are split.

Quite a rapsheet, but the mechanic said he was surprised at the remarkable condition for the car's age. Even the emissions at natural and fast idle are well below half the maximum allowance which was good to know as I thought I saw it smoking at idle when cold.

So there we have it.

If anyone knows of good places to call for the bits I need, please let me know.

I'll keep you posted!

Constant velocity joints is the area directly behind the whell hub. it connects the drive shaft to the hubs and allows them to stay at the same when the wheel is turned.

Well I just called a few places and checked a few websites, so far so crap.

CD7's are a pain to get bits for. I found one place that does a whole poly bush kit, which covers pretty much everything 'except' for the rear trailing arms :(

I guess I'll have to bite my lip and call Honda on Monday, unless the mechanic can track any down cheaper than I can, what with their trade accounts.

Just picked up a replacement oil filter, fuel filter and timing belt kit from Japarts. An easy £70.

Gonna hold off replacing the air filter until after the repairs as I'm gonna source a nice K&N panel filter. I had the original out this afternoon and it looks pretty clean, no muck in the bottom of the intake.

Ah well. I thought I would feel better now I know what needs doing but now I'm just worrying about labour costs lol... Gotta be done though.

Shame about the parts needed as it looks as if it will cost a fair bit... but at least it's getting sorted now. You could try giving Hond-R (01235 530055) a call?

Yeah I might have to. My local Honda dealer quoted me £175 for each new trailing arm as they don't sell the bushes seperately. Absolute ripoff.

My mechanic has got a few people he has trade accounts with looking for the bushes and I have asked a few Accord buddies in the states to ask around if they have any as I reckon even importing some might end up cheaper than going to Honda.

Honda do over charge, but if you want brand new OEM, probably the best place to go. Hond-R are based in Oxford (and for those who haven't worked it out... they specialise in tuning Hondas! They are not a Honda dealer). They should be able to find what you need.

Gonna call them in a min methinx, I was looking at their website a few minutes ago, got a nice selection of Accord items for a UK company. Mainly cosmetic stuff but good to know if I want anything like that.

I'll repost in a bit when I've spoken to them.

Wow, well I am impressed.

The guy I spoke to at Hond-R seemed like a great guy. He explained that because Honda didn't bring many of the Coupes over from the states, not all of the parts are readily available.

Depending on the suspension setup the bushes might be interchangable between the Accord and the prelude, but he is going to speak to his contact at Honda to get some more info.

I was expecting him to just say "Nope, don't have 'em" and that would be that.

Even if Hond-R can't source the bits, I'll definitely be using them again in the future, if only for the excellent customer service.

He is gonna call me back shortly so will keep you posted.

Good to hear you're impressed mate! They really are genuine guys over there and the customer service they provide is second to none. Keep us posted mate.

Right well Honda Uk don't list the part (trailing arm bush) and due to it being multi-link suspension, replacing the bush can be tricky without bending the trailing arm.

Maz @ Hond-R mentioned some other options but first and foremost he is going to contact Honda US tonight and see if he can source the part there which he thinks is a good bet.

Just gotta email the full chassis number and then wait patiently!

*fingers crossed*

You really did help Prince, I thought Hond-R were just a tuning company that sold some cosmetic parts, so wasn't planning on calling them. I had no idea they would go to these lengths to help me.

I'll definitely be using them for my H22 swap and turbo application in the future.

Glad to hear it mate. I look around on Civic Life quite often and they are loved in the Civic world. When I went down for a chat with them. It was Maz who broke everything down and really explained it. He even came up with a price list on all the suspension components I wanted/needed.

This is what forums are all about!

Well just a quick update...

Hond-R haven't heard back from the states yet and neither has the guy from tasauto.com and both Maz (Honda-R) and I have scoured the internet without any joy.

I was starting to think seperate trailing arm bushes are a myth until I came across a website of this 3rd gen civic owner who basically had the same problem but after aaages of searching finally managed to source some in Japan lol.

I don't think I'm going to go that far with it, so I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that I'll need to buy the OEM trailing arms from HondaUK.

It's not a total letdown though, the consolation being that I'll have brand new parts on the car, I've learnt a lot about the suspension for my 'Cord and have made a cool contact in Hond-R.

Just waiting on Maz to get back to me about an Energy Suspension total bush kit and a K&N panel filter now. Might as well change all the bushes whilst the back wheels are off.

Thought I'd post some pics of the bits to go on next week...
