Hey guys! New to this site and very new to all the car stuff. Got a 2002 VW Golf E SDI 1.9 litre Diesel. I want to tune it up a little bit and make it look better. I have NO idea what I'm doing though. Could anyone give me a good place to start? Also, working on a small budget so would have to be a very gradual and slow process as insurance is already biting my ass!

Hi and welcome to a great site with a bunch of members with a wide range of both practical & technical knowledge.
I would suggest a larger diameter free flowing turbo back exhaust for starters.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the advice but you're going to have to really spell things out for me. Im literally completely new at this and want to get involved but need a lot of guidance

What I would do is take it to a good exhaust shop and ask them to remove the complete exhaust system from the turbo outlet and have them fabricate a say two and a half inch MANDREL bent NOT A PRESS BENT system that includes a "hot dog "mid mount resonator (to reduce droning ) and a straight thru rear silencer/muffler as any turbo will perform way better with as close to zero back pressure.

It is important that the resonator and rear silencer have perforated holes internally and NOT LOUVERS PUNCHED IN THEM AS THEY CAUSE TURBULENCE AND REDUCE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEM

FYI Press bends reduce the internal pipe diameter Mandrel bends maintain the internal diameter so they will flow better and produce more power and response.

Hi and welcome to TC forums.
Looking at the specs of engine a remap will give you a great gain of 75nm torque and a healthy gain from your current 100hp of around 35hp to play with. That'll transform your car a lot from what it is now. Should cost around £200

£200?! Is that all? Only issue I have at the moment with increasing the power, is it will also increase my insurance which I'm already paying a fortune for! I just want to subtly make it look smarter. Not like a standard Golf but nothing chavvy or tacky!

Insurance is a tricky one. It all depends on individual circumstances but some companies are more lenient then others. Specialist insurers like Sky, Adrian Flux, Keith Michaels etc are better than mainstream insurers for modified car's. Any body modifications will need to be declared as well along with mechanical alterations.
Awesome Gti website has some bodykits and Gti/R32 bumpers. If you're thinking custom exhaust then the R32 kit looks good with its centre exiting exhaust tips.

Hmm sdi are the non turbo variant I think? In this case I doubt a remap would be the best solution as not sure how a non turbo diesel would get much gain, a tdi swap could be a good shout but obviously not if your on a budget, might be wrong about the remap thiugh

Rereading the post you might be right. Forgot the SDi was non turbo and so it didn't click in my brain when I typed that. The gains look a bit optimistic don't they, 8-10hp at best sounds better. I think Celtic need to look at their car list. Sorry to get your hopes up but still recommend a remap as it'll still transform the power delivery
