FORD ESCORT 1.4 CVH
hi, i recently took off of my 1.4 cvh engined escort the bit that sits above the intake manifold (been up since 430 and just got in brains stopped working and i cant remember its proper name)to give it a clean as it breathes a bit heavy and had oil stains all inside and was jsut looking nasty, ive put it back on and now when i start it it starts then cuts out after about 10 -15 seconds, ive since left it as for some bizzare reason it keeps popping flames out the top (i have no air filter on it have a new K&N to go on to it) any way back to the first point, any one know of the reason for the cut out ? is really annoying if i try to rev it to keep it running it just dies also again, but i have noticed that the fuel keeps going to match the throttle position if that helps at all, any ideas would be helpful,

cheers

ps is it worth porting the head at all or shoud i just convert it from a 1.4 to something bigger and turbo'd ( a turbo civic motor?

Put in a zetec 2.0 and work with this instead of a 1.4cvh. for the problem, is it the plastic piece that two pipe come out of on the top of the rocker box?

bugger the zetec try and find a "real" duratec engine and fit that.
note the focus st 170s engine was badged as a duratec but was only a tuned zetec

Was it the Carb you were talking about? It sounds like it is running too rich now. Did you alter the fuelling at all? Did you remove the cam belt?

all i done was take it off give it a clean and put it back on i did take what i belive to be a throttle position sensor its a red thing bolted the other side to the the throttle cable but i put it back on as it was found, its not got carbs its got a single constant fuel injector just above the the throttle body with many vacuum hoses and this that and the other going to it, could it be a mixed up hose?? its getting annoying now and a big problem now too i cant move it only way to move it would be to key it over in gear ( parked on a bit of slope ) not good, could it be the tiny filament type thing inside next to the injector? any ideas got me stumped, hope you guys can help

thanks

The CVH engines are old old old now. THey were never really respected even when in production.

Is the problem down to oil fouling and contamination? These engines were one of the worst victims of the dreaded black death.

It's caused by inadequate crankcase ventilation and oils that really can't cope.

A full drain and two or three flush cycles might well sort it. Whilst doing this take out the throttle body and immerse in petrol.

This engine will work well with modern oils and fuel but you have to remove the tar and crap firstly.

thanks for the idea but that sounds a it extreme as it ran before fine had a slightly high idle which is why i took it off (found a split vacuum hose ) but fine and the oil was changed not that long ago.

but thanks any was will remind me to change the oil regularly :D

All it can be is something small I'd say too, the likes of a wrong vacuum hose somewhere, is your butterfly flap opening and closing smoothly?
