Hello everyone,
I have a 1996 Mercedes-Benz Sl500 with the 119 5.0L v8. DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder. Stock internals with estimated 320 hp. I am a retired auto mechanic with a love of high performance engines. I just finished building and selling a 660hp, 600tq retired nascar block, 374 ci small block ford!

It is on my bucket list to build a 1k hp engine.
I prefer not to do an engine swap, however I do understand there’s a 12 cylinder m119 that came stock in my 96 R129, (SL600).
I’ve joined this forum because I’ve seen a lot of information that tells me this forum has the knowledge to help me reach my goal!

Please let me know where to start…….
Thanks in advance!

Hello and a very warm, welcome to TorqueCars from me the admin! Sorry for my slow reply, it's been a very busy time for me at the moment but hopefully, I've caught up.

I'm sure you'll fit in just fine and look forward to Talking Cars with you.

What is your budget? A supercharger, fast road cams, piggyback ECU/remap and fuel improvements would be my top mod suggestions for this.

I like the sound of this project, we love diversity and respect ALL car projects.

What mods have you done already and which ones do you recommend? What things would you like us to cover in our articles on the main site? - Feedback from our members greatly shapes what content we research and provide.

Keep reading the articles on our site and this forum... you'll pick up loads of good common sense tips and don't be afraid to post questions, we're all here to share our knowledge and experience.

We run a really fun and interesting car community and many have said we're the friendliest around, always ready to help out where we can.

Enjoy your time with us, post loads and feel free to ask any questions or begin new threads and discussions. We're always interested to hear your comments and views on our existing topics and in the hot polls.

The only modifications I have made to this point are, 1). Lowered the suspension with performance springs and struts, 2). K&N air filters. I’ve held off doing much because I didn’t want to duplicate modifications to get to my goal of 1k hp!

I completely agree I will need to do tuning, probably a combination of supercharger and turbo’s, fuel system upgrades and a new ecu/mapping. However, I’m thinking I need to start with the foundation (internals) to handle the hp increases I want to see! I have access to a complete machine shop for crank grinding, bore and stroke changes, larger valves, all of which I would expect to make!

As I mentioned earlier, I prefer keeping the original engine, however, I’m hoping to connect with someone familiar with the M119 block to determine if I’m better off going to a 6.0 L, V12.

Conversations I’ve had with RENNtech, received a response of, don’t bother with an M119 build. The M113 5.0 L I know came with a supercharger or turbo’s from the factory. I believe the M113 was available in the 1999-2002 SL500 and SL600.

Obviously I’m trying to avoid the dreaded immediate failure of overboosting a brand new build!
