porsche 911 sc2
Well after driving a problem free supercharged m3 e46 vert for 18 months i decided to sell her and move on to a porsche,so i went out there with a big pocket of cash looking at cars,i searched here and looked there finally i found one that ticked all the boxes, the right colour very nice interior turbo alloys, sports exhaust etc and although a little bit against what i wanted its got the 3.4 engine was hoping for the 3.6 c4 but got a 2000 porsche 996 3.4 sport vert with hard top...

had the car a week and things are not going well at all this week ive had 2 new back tyres, drivers side coffin arms and anti roll bar bushes at a cost of a grand fitted,"" gulp ""

but it hasnt fixed the reason im asking this on here my problem is that when i take my foot of the accelerator i get a vibration through the car that rattles the fillings loose in my teeth, ive had it on the ramp looking for problems such as exhaust rub, ive checked all the arms the wheels,im beggining to think of putting a for sale sign in the window, and going out and buying a m3 vert again as i had no issues with the m3, but had the total opposite from whats supposed to be a great car, to be honest at the moment i wouldnt tell anyone to think about buying a porsche..the parts are ridiculous so you cant say ill try this and try that, because every part on the running gear cost mega quids, has anyone any idea what can cause this is dosnt do it when im accelerating, just when i take my foot of the peddle and the car slows down to about 3000 revs and then makes the horrible vibration...

by the way my names craig and im new here so hiya hope someone can make me tottaly change my views on porsche's

Hi Craig and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of the troubles with Porsche ownership, nobody said supercar ownership was ever going to be cheap (ask me how I know :blink1:). I'm not great on fixing cars, basic service is about my limit, but I'll ask a few guys I know in Porsche club about your fault or send me a PM and I can put you in touch with the right guy to talk to. Where abouts in the country are you?

Hope to get you back on the road soon anyway.

Andy

Hi Andy,
thanks for the fast reply,i own a service centre here in blackpool but like the dealers fixing my own cars.
Im more annoyed at myself for basically seeing the car and buying it without proper looking at things however in my defense it was 11pm by the time i got to london, so wouldnt have seen the misery under the car that i have when i put it on my ramp...

exhaust bolts snapped i extracted the snaped ones and replaced with nice new ones makeing the car sound like a porsche rather than a beetle lol...

then i checked the arms and rubbers had perished and come loose so replaced these, had 4 wheel laser alignment which was hugely out before...

the blower didnt work so i took the cover off and found a twig had got in and jammed the barrel blades stopping them from turning easy fix,

the car felt like it was on ice so i changed the anti roll bushes.

ive looked everywhere for this annoying vibration ,the best way i can explain it is the engine seems to be unbalanced like back in the day of the 40's and 45's ,when they had to be set right or it would be terrible, i would put it down to worn cams or maybe slight buckle in the crank but the engine is perfect, the power is awsome its just when i let off and let it ride down the gear, as soon as they are at 3000 revs its vibrating bad then when the revs get to about 2500 and it stops

thanks again andy for the welcome and the reply any help trying to cure this would be great

I've sent a message out to the Porsche community so should get some replys soon. As I said I ain't good with cars but am passionate about Porsche and these supercars are all about the experience. I have read similar symptoms on our front engine 944's and engine mounts have been the issue but as you say parts with the word Porsche stamped on them are pricey and you don't want to go changing bits unless you really know you have to.
Where in UK are you as I've an excellent independent Porsche specialist guy down South here who can help.

hi andy
im in blackpool which is north west near preston and about an hour away from manchester,
my next thought was to remove the engine and see what ive got to contend with ,ive thought maybe engine mounts but ive just had it in my local volkswagon porche garage, and they said they checked everywhere but have they mmmmmm.ive just been reading a forum where someone has almost the same problem solved where the crank pulley wasnt running true,so the garage replaced this but at the same time changed a engine mount near the gearbox,so now ive got maybe a pulley distort or an engine mount problem or possible gearbox mount...

priced the parts up as well engine mounts will cost me around 400 quid to change all of them and 150 for the gearbox mounts, cant seem to find a pulley though bet that will be as much as buying the engine lol

thanks again andy for trying to find out for me

how many engine mounts does my car have im reading 3 then someone has said 4 now someone has said 2 grrrrrrrrrrr

Couple of questions asked

Did you have the problem before fitting new tyres & did you have them on car balanced. If anything on the running drive shafts/wheels is out then an on car balance will correct that.

Is it rev' related or speed? Does it make the same vibration coming down from 3000 to 2000 in all gears? Or is it at a certain speed?

Found Hartech garage are near you in Bolton and they are a very respected Porsche specialist http://www.hartech.org/ You really need a specialist to look at your car not any old garage, you don't want to pay labour rates for someone to learn how to fix your particular model. Remember your car is a £70k+ supercar and requires specialist knowledge.

Hope that helps

Andy

hi andy the tyres are balanced ive just had the camber and alignment done,as soon as the revs hit 2000 not 3000 it vibrates no matter what gear its in although its tiptronic lol.
ive ordered engine mounts today so hoping that cures it.if not im taking the engine out and sending it off to be balanced to see if thats the problem,i tried driving it in ice but i just turned around lol.
im just getting cured of the porsche it will end up in my workshop with a cover on it and left there, ive got a few there at the moment hahaha..
its just mega depressing me at the moment also the noises and creeks are annoying ive ordered some gear to put on the seals etc hopefully it will work...
should have bought a newer turbo porsche i think and forget about looking at 966 3.4 2 or at least have gone for the 3.6 carrera 4

I would have said engine mounts or crank pulley as some makes can start to fall apart causing vibration, but I know diddly squat about Porsches. A work colleague has enough expense running his 944 so god only knows the costs you have taken on! Hope it gets sorted easily.

Know how he feels. Had a gear selector fork fail earlier this year £1000 to fix at mates rates. Having the cylinder head rebuilt at the moment, machined, new valves, seals etc etc £1500 mates rates again and there ain't no labour costs in that, just parts :amazed: So far I've spent £6000 on my engine modifying it and still got loads to do, new exhaust next @ £1200. Porsches are mega expensive but boy when they're well sorted and work properly they reward you massively and make it all worthwhile :bigsmile:

Ok general opinion from replys are

Sounds like its time to take it to a proper specialist, like Hartech, they will probably diagnose the problem in no time, do not believe that coming at the problem from several directions at once will serve you well, If this is a standard unmodified engine I would be massively surprised if it needed balancing, plus its a boxer motor, the squarest engine configuration there is, take it to a specialist

Kind of what I was feeling. There's probably a sensor that the diagnostics program can see, theres a sensor for everything else on those:blink:

Sent you a PM

lol yeah seems that next job i do is take it to the dealer, the guys that have it at the moment do a lot of vw and do my mk5 r32 so i just let them play with the porsche.
hopefully though they will find the irratation soon if not this time.i will take it to the dealer.
my new front seats came today and ive just ordered a bodykit gonna be a looker when its finished into the paint shop next week..

found a pretty cheap shop for porsche parts

http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_911_engine_components.html#a1_215208

yes i ordered the techart one on this nice looking porsche

http://www.wickedmotorworks.com/cardetails.php?carid=10092

i really want to be a happy porsche owner, ive had a phone call tonight from volksgarage where my car is ,and they are saying the bottom pulley isnt running true its got a wobble on the pulley, they took it off and put it on a spinning spindle to see if its the pulley or rhw shaft its on i supppose the crank and it has fgot a wobble, so hopefully this is causing the vibation, but apparently its a porsche dealer part so will find out if its a job to try or to make sure it will fix it as i expect it will be a fainting price lol..
cant wait to show the car when its finished im now thinking off colour changing it ive seen a porsche thats almost like secca blue, apparently a lts edition so who knows ive got a week to decide before it goes in for paint, what do you think of the colour,at the minute its dark blue almost black but has what looks like a colour changing mica in it ...

I just wanted to pop my head in and welcome you to the site. Nice to meet you and I do hope you get your lovely car up and running.

The Techart kits are quite popular and well made so can't go wrong there. Porscheshop are good, are you a member of the Porsche club GB or TIPEC as you get a healthy discount as a member :blink1: Design911 are also a good source of spares for modern Porsches and you get a discount with them also. Try the OPC as sometimes they come out cheaper:eek:
You've probably got Midnight blue or similar at the moment which I like a lot, I have the similar Pearl graphite blue on my Golf :amuse: With a kit though if you're going to fit one you may as well make it stand out more so a brighter shade will certainly have the right effect :D Was considering Viper stripes for my 944 when I fit this kit
