Finally, my dream has come true. I'm a pensioner and purchased a 1988 VWKombi with a JT3000 Conversion. The Kombi was factory fitted with a Sierra 3L 6 Cylinder engine. According to the previous owner, it has a modified Cam, not sure about the specs. Initially, it drove well. I have cleaned the engine with Paraffin and washed it down with water. Drained the water and replaced it with 7L Anti-Freeze, and topped it up with water, as the label reads to use a 60-40% mixture. Changed the oil filter and put new oil in. Checked the Points gap. It reads ,45mm (17Thou Inch). This is according to Spec. On start-up, since, it does not want to idle steadily. The oil Press gauge reads 4Bar and falls to 3. When I rev the engine, she picks up, but its difficult to maintain steady revolutions. I did a 30KM drive along a mountain pass and have to either increase speed or decrease. At 100KM/h the engine surges, which is the nominal speed on our roads. I intend to go touring through the country, thus requiring a smooth and constant running engine. I'd appreciate any advise, which I shall follow up on. Timing has been set to approx 12deg BTDC@1000RPM. I don't know the Dwell Angle. Looking forward to replies.

Hello and welcome |B

While I am not familiar with your car logically it seems to me that if it was running fine before you cleaned the engine then water or whatever must have penetrated various electrical connections so IMO you need to seperate them and clean with an electrical cleaner then spray with a waterproof-er like RP7 to seal the connection.

It could be dirty fuel, dirty fuel filter, erratic fuel pump. CHeck air filter and air inlet. DOes the engine run cold or hot?
