Here is a long overdue article on an often overlooked aspect of Car insurance. Car insurance - all policies state "Has the car been modified, altered or adapted from the manufacturers original specification or has it been tuned. All insurers need to know if a car has been modified. The stats of the insurers generally show that modified cars are involved in more claims, not just accidents but there is a greater likely hood of the car being stolen.

The MG is insured with Peter Best on a modern classic policy, this type doesn't use NCB. I get a years free breakdown included but limited to 5k miles which is adequate. All my mods are declared and this only costs me £138 fully comp.

The only company I have found that is prepared to insure the Elan is Adrian Flux. As all of our cars are either modified or sporty (remapped Astra, modified Audi S3, Merc SLK) we are all with them. Even my VW Fox is with them as I get a multicar discount :)

Until you get to old. I pay less for my ins gp16 Golf then my 79 yr old Father in law does for his Ford Focus!

Best insurance I ever had was on my Porsche 944 turbo SE. £180 a year for a 330hp modified Porsche with guaranteed value on a classic policy with Heritage. Bargain ;)

Any recommendations for a cheap insurance company for a young driver with a modified car?
I've got a Alfa giulietta with 170bhp as standard I've looked at getting a new exhaust system and it remapped my insurance went from 840 a year no mods to 1600 with the remap and 840 to 1200 with new exhaust (this is with elephant/admiral)
the few things are that I've had a crash over 2 years ago on my first car which the blame fell on me unfortunately not much damage just still a claim.
The other thing is do I declare an engine remap as I've been told by my friends who work in the insurance body shop that they've never checked a cars ECU in the 15 years they've been doing it?

By law any undeclared modifications including a remap will void your policy and in effect you're driving around with no insurance so definitely declare it. Your friends are not the ones who will be out of pocket if something happens and the insurance company finds out you have way more performance than they insured you for.
As for insurance on modified car's for younger drivers try A Plan, Sky, Footman James, Heritage, and any others that will be listed in the back of car magazines. Sky were very good for my Skyline GTR and they are very enthusiastic on their modded cars. You can also look to see if their is an owners club. You often get discounts for members and the club may have negotiated a good policy with a particular insurer. The small membership cost is normally far outweighed by the savings on insurance, parts and specialist advice they give.

Just remembered who I'm with which is H and R Insurance. They do policies with KGM who cover a lot of specialist cars and are the ones who covered my Porsche 944T when it was in an accident. I've just paid £177 for my Golf GT170 which I thought was pretty good. They are not bothered about the remap when I eventually get that done.
Adrian Flux, PerformanceDirect and Keith Michaels are some more specialists. I'm afraid it's a case of talking to each one and see who comes up with best value for cover provided.

Thanks for the advice, I am planning to declare it, i just wanted to see other peoples thoughts on the matter. I will try sky insurance as a few people have recommended them to me. I will give them a call later to see what they can offer I just thought that a 200% increase on my insurance was mad when I'm only getting a 24% bhp gain with the remap and a lot less with the exhaust.
thanks again for the recommendations, I will try calling them soon as my remap is 1 week Friday and would quite like my car being covered.

Always mention our site by name, a few companies advertise through us and it helps if our name keeps cropping up. ;)

I spoke to Sky insurance last night and they offered me a quote which was £400 under what I had got elsewhere and did say I'm on this forum so hope that helped.
cheers for all the recommendations, especially Aerial Andy944.
