French car socket sizes

Does anyone know why French cars have daft socket sizes that are between the standard UK sizes?

Perhaps because they're metric and UK cars have used imperial nuts and bolts since the year dot?

Ford Sierra Cosworths were metric back in the 80s, so I imagine the rest of Ford's range was (probably because they were made in Germany and Spain).

I've no idea either,

I've had my Peugeot for 4 years now and I do find them weird when it come to that, when taking off the covers for the cam belt the bolts are 11mm and then theres one bolt left thats 10mm, why the hell can't they be all the same?
Also the french love torx head bolts, my luck I didn't have any and had to go out and buy a set.
