Hey anybody out there,

I have recently purchased a 2.0L zx4 focus with somewhere around 130 hp, and I'm hoping to get some better performance out of the engine. With money as no object, within reason, what can be done to squeeze every available horse out of the engine? I'm considering 200-250 hp my goal.

Hello and welcome to the site mate

about 100bhp gain, do you get the focus rs out in the states ?

best idea would be sell the 2.0 and buy the 2.5 turbo. bang 130bhp to 300bhp.
tuning NA engines is hard and even with your money no object youd probably be cheaper buying something better as a base.

other option would be to fit the 170 engine and get some work done on that with an aggressive map you might get 200

No RS in the states unfortunately. However the 2013 ST is just around the corner, equipped with a 2.0 ecoboost turbo. Your Zetec-E will easily do 200+ whp normally aspirated. My 02 ZX5 turns 224 whp with a ported head with +1mm undercut valves, stage 2 cams, 65mm TB, cold air intake, and a 2.5" exhaust. If you provide the installation labor you can do this with about $3500. I did mine about eight years ago so part availability and prices may have changed. I also managed to stay just around 9-1 compression so I can add a turbo in the future if I want.

The Duratec engine in the 2005+ Focus's is among my favorites. It's a rebadged Mazda MZR engine so there's quite a lot you can do with it. I'm a GM guy but I'd really like to toy around with those engines in a "Let's poke it with a stick and see what happens" kind of manner.
During my research, I came across the fact that Cosworth, on of my favorite aftermarket companies, makes a plethora of parts for the 2.0L and 2.3L duratec and MZR engines.
Cosworth Crankshafts:

Pistons, rods, and bearings, OH MY!

cylinder heads, valves springs, and camshafts, etc.

Shop around the website. There's more, I guarantee you.

Other companies I'd trust with making parts for the engine include Focusport, now called FSWerks: http://www.fswerks.com/

If you want to turbocharge the car, you best bets are either the FSwerks turbo kit or trying to find a wrecked Mazdaspeed 3 or Mazdaspeed 6 to strip the engine of it's turbo specific parts.
For superchargers, I think you're SOL. The only company I know of that was working on a kit was F2 Focus and they seem to have gone out of business.
