Fiesta transmission whine

My 2003 Fiesta 1600 (32k) has a pronounced transmission whine when cold (especially if the outside temp is low) in 1st and a lesser extent 2nd gear; this reduces to just audible when warm. Is this normal for the car or indicate a possible problem?

The first cost effective remedy to try would be to have the transmission oil replaced. A quick google has brought this up as a cure for a similar fault for your particular model.
