Family car

would have to be the v70 for me

the mondeo would have to go lower then 2000 to come good the newer shape ones are quite good

but for me not as nice as a v70 auto with full leather

Hard call. Neither is a bad option.

[Please don't buy a Vauxhall bloody Vectra though].

At a push it would be specced up Mondeo. I was a Ford baiter for years but the current Mondeo is a brilliantly built car.

THen again, the Volvo interior is gorgeous.

In truth, either will serve you very well indeed.

THe only thing I'd avoid is 4 cylinder diesels - the DMF is too much of a liability.

Volvo's diesels are 5 cylinder units so buy with confidence.

The Mondeo is likely to be cheaper to run than a Volvo when you consider parts costs but that might be quite different in your area.

and if you get the diesel volvo get the d5 better lump out the lot of them
facts i was going to get the v70 d5 but then changed my mind to a lexus ls430
but now might of changed my mind a again to a bigger bike

My parents bought a second-hand Volvo V70 a few years ago from one of those online services. Despite it being second-hand, they've had no problems whatsoever, even now, 3 years on. I think the only thing they've had done to it was a replaced tyre when my Dad backed out of the drive and onto a nail - d'oh!

Not got much knowledge of the Mondeo, so can't really pass judgement on that. However I can probably vouch for what waynne says, that the Mondeo will be cheaper to run. The Volvo has done my parents proud, but it can be quite expensive at times.

Didn't know that the Mazda/Ford tie up was still going strong. Last one I remember was the Mazda 121 Fiesta lookalike. That was in about 1932

mondeo as parts are cheap, and they have a good saftey rating,
volvo are tanks, but cost a lot for parts

Don't quote me on it but i'm 90% sure they share alot of parts.

I suspect you're totally correct. Such tie ups usually only end when one brand formally rids itself of the other.

It's a shame that Ford has let go fo Jaguar and latterly Volvo. Having pulled the Quality Control into spec there was an opportunity to buy a new or nearly new Jag or Volvo with some peace of mind.

Ford is, in my opinion, the trend setting brand for reliability over the last ten years. They also make some bloody fine cars, none are bad now IMHO.

i would choose the mondeo, not only because i and a ford fan but because the parts are cheaper, they are relativly easy to work on, very reliable unless you go for the deisel which tends to have an injector issue,
plus the mondy handles exceptionaly well for a family car compared to the volvo which may well be a little faster as standard but you still have the option of tweeking the mondy or buying an ST... if money is an issue then the ST TDCi is good on economy and has pleanty of grunt!

IIRC Mazda are using Ford floor pans for a number of models, they are still very close. Doesnt the '3' use the Focus floorpan and the '6' use the Mondeo?

Agree with you, Ford is getting better all the time. Although wish they would bring in something to compare with the previous Escort Cosworth's. The new Focus RS just isnt outrageous enough. Where is the Focus Cosworth that has been mooted and talked about for years??

in regards to the mondeo - we have a new one for the office, its a good car with plenty of space but couple of issues:
1) auto gearbox, imo its a bit slow on the uptake sometimes when changing gears. Feel that it would be faster using a manual but this maybe because i'm biased and really do prefer manual boxes.
2) suspension in the rear is quite soft - however this may be because they have changed it for Vietnamese roads
