Hello everybody i'm new to this forum thing and hoping someone can help ?

I've just put my evo 2 gsr back on the road after 4 months of painstaking engine rebuild. Some Modifications during this were mild cyl head porting, 2.5 inch custom stainless exaust sys, refaced valves etc and a dam good check and clean up of every thing ! internal and external. Scince putting my well loved car back on the road ive noticed a dramatic loss of power and in double checkig all possibillitys found that my ignition timing is firing 3 degrees atdc when should be 5 degrees btdc and i am unable to rectifiy this problem by altering the cam pos sensor without loosing all power. (flat as a witches tit ) I have checked and rechecked my belt timing and all is spot on. Can anybody please help as i am starting to loose the enjoyment of driving my much loved car ?.......:sad2:

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP......................

Hi and welcome to TorqeuCars.

That is a nightmare scenario - after all that hard work. If the timing is retarted by this much are you suffering from "engine knock"? If the cams are correct and aligned correctly with the timing belt.

Have you remapped the engine? Are you running standard boost? Did you change the cam profile? How many miles has the rebuilt engine covered?

What fuel are you using? Is it a good quality branded fuel? Try Super unleaded the very highest octane you can which is probably BP racing fuel or Shell Optimax.

Have you checked the air temp/lambda sensors are working?

Thank you wayne for reply i am already running super unleaded and she is running stadard boost at the moment but i have noticed that the boost has droped slightly from 10 psi to aprox 8.5 -9.0 scince my rebuild. The problem i have is im down in the middle of nowere right on the edge south welsh coast and not many people down here have had much experience with jap imports so not much knowlage. all the sensors are working to my knowlage but will check them all to make sure and the ecu has not been maped yet ( still on my shopping list ) but i think that i am loosing some back pressure as i have took the silencers and cat out of the exaust system but dont think that would cause the problems i am having. would it ???
Thak you very much for your reply any advice or help is much appreceated.

Check the intake gaskets and bolts. It could be something silly like its not done up enough.

I think if you solve the boost issue you will have the problem fixed. Now the question is why is boost down? Is the turbo in good condition? Are there any air/exhaust leaks.

Removing the cat and the silencers might well be causing the issue - your exhaust is just too free flowing.

It would certainly be worth getting in touch with Simon Norris of Norris Designs who are an EVO specialist. You can't beat specialist knowledge - you may need to travel but you will save hours in hunting down faults.

A mate of mine had cutouts and flat running after fitting an induction kit. It turned out to be the fuelling was at issue. It couldn't deliver enought fuel to match the air flow so the ecu held everything back. (His was an FQ400 but the problem sounds similar to yours!)

FOUND THE PROBLEM !!!!! HAPPY DAYS!!!! after stripping the belts off totaly found that balance shaft was out bye 180 degrees and crank 1 tooth retarded thanks too ****y timing marks and lack of info, but all good now. I can now start enjoying my car again thaks to all that tryed to help though much apprecated . Will try and get some pics and possibly some vid's on site soon as soon as i work out how to.
Thanks too all.
