Engine/gearbox upgrade for MK 1 Ford Escort

Hi,

I am looking at buying a Mk 1 Ford Escort with a 1300 cc engine and standard manual gearbox.

I am interested to know what options are available when considering an engine and suitable manual gearbox upgrade.

I am also interested in understanding the cost of these conversions.

The Classic Cosworth 2.0 and MTX transmission will really transform this, and it's been done plenty of times before.

Even Standard Sierra 2.0 Engines have a lot of scope for mods and upgrades, cost depends on how much work you can do yourself. Getting a mechanic to do the word can add another 100-200% to the cost of the parts.

Focussing on a RWD engine and gearbox from Fords through the same era is generally the easiest upgrade path for you. Burton power in the UK have lots of parts and upgrades. I'm not sure what the Classic Escort scene is like over there or how easy it is to source parts there.

If I was doing this I would source a donor car and strip the parts down myself getting the custom engine mounts and pipe work sorted at I go. At least you know you have a complete working donor vehicle.
