Is it true that a tyre is ruined when you use the tyre repair foam - the stuff that comes in an aerosol can.

Some people have said you can scrape the stuff out ok and repair the tyre but others say you may just as well throw it away!

What are your thoughts on this?

Some cars are supplied with a can of puncture fix foam in lieu of a spare wheel so would not have expected it to damage the tyre

^^ Exactly! I had a difference of opinion with a tyre supply company after I had to use one of those cans to get me home once after a puncture. Popped into the tyre centre to get the puncture repaired and they argued that they could not repair it due to the solid coating left behind by the canister. Long story short, they scraped the area with a make shift scraper and plugged the hole and it is still going strong now.

The puncture repair plugs that are pushed in from the outside without removing the tyre IMO are only ok for your wheelbarrow and should not be used on car/truck tyres.
The correct type require the tyre to be off the wheel and for the want of a better description look like a tiny umbrella. and as T9 said the surface has to be preped for the adhesive as well.

It is perfectly legal and safe to scrape and wash out the tyre before repair. A lot of tyre dealers don't like doing this as the stuff is toxic. My tyre dealer (Brian Hennessey of Buckingham Tyres) masks and gloves up like a surgeon to perform this task.

There used to be a very clever means of repairing punctures without removing the tyre. It involved the use of hypodermic needles and specialist vulcanising resins and solvents. It is now illegal, at least in the UK.

The sense behind it is not so much that the repair method is bad, but because part of the requriement for a puncture repair is that the tyre is thoroughly inspected before repair. Obviously it cannot be thoroughly inspected whilst still mounted on the rim !!!! For once, a sensible bit of legislation!!
