Ok then, what is the difference between a liftback and a hatchback?

I note that Toyota had both a liftback and a hatchback in their range so they must be different things.

How do you define them or would you say they are the same thing?

They are one of the same 'Liftback' was the USA/Far East name for the 'hatchback' (European name) basically.

As above ^^^. I have a cousin out in NY state and hes always refering to them as liftback. Confuzzles the hell out of me thinking they have some better version of a car than us. Well they do when it comes to the Foucs anyway. Americas version is loads nicer.

Liftback is a term that Britain pretty much ignored.

A true hatchback is a near vertical boot (Golf, Civic etc.).

A liftback is more obviously angled (much like a fastback or notchback).

Take a look at wiki's Liftback page.
