Hi basically I am now doing a degree in competition car technology and my current assignment is to take a race car and compare the engine and gearbox to its road counterpart and assess how each little spec had been altered for use in race.
I do want to do a car from a slightly older class like gt1 and I have been trying to find specs on the mclaren f1, bmw s70 engine but I cannot find enough specs on the engine and gearbox.
I can take any car realistically but I do still have my preferences as I find it easier to explain N/A tuning rather than forced induction.
If anyone knows of any race car's (and road car counterpart) engine and gearbox that have been published in great detail that I could use that would be great or know of any sites that I could use that would have what I am looking for.
Cheers

From my limited knowledge and biased view, there is a lot of information on the net regarding tuning Cosworth YB turbo engines. I know you prefer N/A but you will have trouble finding worthwhile info these days. Also, race engine builders tend to keep their specs to themselves so you will have trouble finding this out.

The cosworth would be a good one, some great rally cars are powered by that of course so that'd be fun.
In terms of explanations I can obviously do turbo I'd just have to do a load more research as most of my knowledge lies within N/A, I suppose there's nothing wrong with expanding my mind
Yeah true they probably would but I was thinking some of the older engine tuning may not be as closely guarded as the newer technology, could be wrong of course.

Isn't that the point of education? :)

It may not be as closely guarded, but someone has to post it on the internet as it doesn't appear by magic :) The engine builders have no reason to post this sort of info.

Hahaha yeah true.

I guess if I can't find what I truly need I'll have a trip out and talk to someone or see if there is anything of use in the student library, I'll leave this post open though in case anyone else is able to weigh in
Cheers

That's a pretty good point, I have already started gathering a load of specs for the escort cosworth mind you but I haven't started the assignment yet so I will do this on the side and see what I can find and then choose between the two.
Cheers

If you are looking to compare the road and race specs of the same engine then the the Cortina isn't a good choice. As Gladrags said, the standard Mk1 and Mk2 Cortinas were fitted with single cammed pushrod engines whilst the Lotus versions (the Mk1 Lotus Cortina and the Mk2 Cortina Lotus) were fitted the twin overhead cammed engines. The block, crank and rods were similar but the heads and carbs were different.

True but I don't think it has to be the engine itself it's more assessing the road car vs race/rally car variants but then focusing on the power train alone so the cortina is possible

That sounds cool actually! I feel that when it comes to some sort of modifications that gets apply this way or having knowledge through studying automobile or practical learning that's a lot of talent to me. I have seen people doing some amazing work with their rides and its always mouthwatering lol.
