Cooling system sensors

Peugeot 405 SRDT
My 94 SRDT occasionally displays the red stop light in the dash along with the red warning light in the temperature gauge. The fans start to run when the engine is cold or hot. The temperature gauge indicates normal temperature. Can anyone provide me with some advice please.
