cool air induction for 2001 accord

hey guys,

this is my first post so yes i am new, but i'd like some help.

i have just got myself a nice 2001 honda accord 2.0 Vtec exec and as this is my first decent car ( my 2 preivous cars being crappy old fords that i havnt cared about and seen no reason to upgrade ) i'd like to make an upgrade that is going to improve performance and the sound of the engine. im thinking a decent cool air induction system.

firstly; the car at the moment is stock, should there be other things i should do first so i dont mess it up. or is there anything that you would recomend that i do first.

secondly; what is a good brand to trust when buying a new induction system, or which is best.

sorry, but "crappy old ford"? lol, personal opinion! what fords did you have?

welcome to the forum!

as for cold air feed, the best type would be one that prevents heat soak.
so either an uprated panel filter, or an enclosed cold air feed that doesn't take in air that is already in the engine bay.

Cat-back exhaust system, de-cat/sports cat, 4-1 manifold (or a 4-2-1 depending on how you use it) and a panel filter will be a good start power wise.

TBH there won't be much of an improvement over Honda's design. Most induction kits just suck in warm air from the engine meaning a loss in performance. A bad example is the K&N 57i kit as this has no heat shield. If a heat shield is included then the cone needs to be as far away from the engine as possible. Search 'AEM v2' and you'll see a good example.

so really its not even worth doing unless im taking an enclosed cold air feed rather then just taking warm air from in the engine bay with a better induction system?

by "crappy old fords" i mean 10-15 yr old escorts i got cheap just as a run around to get me to work and stuff.

I dont understand how the induction can take in the warm engine air, when mine is mounted where the box enclosure used to be. Hence, bringing in continuous fresh cold air through TWO air inlets in the corner of the engine bay?! I just need a bigger filter rather than better inlets

I shall explain, if the air filter for the induction kit is left inside the engine with NO protection around it irrespective of the fact that it is sitting over the original air box position being fed by TWO air inlets, then it will take in the warm/hot air developed by the engine.
If the Induction kit is of the closed variety i.e. the filter comes built inside a purpose built housing then this problem is dramatically reduced.
If however the kit you have has an exposed air filter then it is wisest to build a heat shield around it sealing off as much exposure to the engine bay hot air as possible. I would also suggest wrapping the heat shield still further with heat deflecting material from Demon Tweeks or such like.

Aaahhh, i see what u mean. My setup is pretty much the same, minus the extra breather etc (for now) as its a new buy. I just havent added the extra wrap around shield. Glad to have seen it though as it makes sense. Nice engine bay btw, looks good in the blue. May have to steal the colour if u dont mind ;o)
 
Also, i forgot... On my accord, the bottom lhs of the bay (as in your pic) has a lot more room and depth so pretty much out of the way if you think the honda engine design is quite central and slightly backwards tilting, with factory strut bar on top. Will post a pic soon to fully explain. Just a bit plain at the mo :eek:/

That' because the Japanese tend to use small engine blocks. Don't worry about excess space. Just think function>form mate. ;)
 
Oh i am hehe... The more power the better... But how far do u think i should go before hitting the reliability issues? Dont want to give the mrs another excuse to bitch, she already hates the amount i spend on fuel haha ;o) ... Also, do u know any 'cheap' places for performance parts? Being a grease monkey by trade, the i can do but parts are the wallet killer :eek:/
 
You can easily run 200bhp+ in a 4 pot Honda engine, it's just a case of how you get there. You might find going turbo is the way, but when I had a Civic I kept things n/a. What's the power as standard?
 
Standard brake is 147 but not sure what it is at present. I have a self made CAI and engine breather filter directly on the intake. Im thinking, after some careful investigation, that i may go the supercharger route. Im thinking that with the belt driven, cooler running charger, i can boost performance with minimal modification. Espe ially as you can fit a charger to stock engines without having to mess around with coolers etc. But also, looking around, ive found that on honda engines, chargers are prefered to turbos. All we can do is try eh?! ;oD
