You won't believe my luck...it turns out i can finally get a toyota...not jst any toyota...a silly car! Lol...unfortunately normally aspirated, better than a 1.4 clio though. Couldn't the 3s-gte...i'm sure i'll find one in zambia and maybe arrange an engine swap. In the mean time, what are the possibitlies?

Ps. Seems to have a free flow...open the hood and there is the familiar sight....induction kit with cold air intake....i love imports!

Re: Clio Owners introduce yourselves here.

Nice the Celica is a fine car, 2nd only to the Supra IMHO. A 3s-gte swap should be straight forwardish. (It's probably best if I move this new thread to Toyota forum now.;)

Re: celia

lol...i check that...i'm quite sad....my CV joint broke....idiots who were skimming tightened it too hard...and now my hub is bust...ordered a new one so can't drive until it arrives...will do a full service soon so will need info on what i can change.....

cool checked you changed it....will fight to get some of my money back....other than she's not moving....there's a strange sound when i change down and hit 3rd....it also happens when i drag...the minute i short shift to 3rd i get the sound....could be the selector i've been told....maybe you have heard of it

It could be the gearbox itself. Do any other gears make this noise? Is it just on the change of gear that it happens?

spoke the mechanic...he says if it continues the gearbox will develop a problem...otherwise the selector and gear are not aligning nicely because something is worn out...can't remember the name...otherwise i lost a drag to the new standard ford fiesta...thats not a good sign...something is not right...

2nd to 3rd gear in any car does get abused, 3rd syncro alright
throw some slick 50 in with new gear oil and see what happenes, its well cheaper than buying a syncro for it

wow...that's a new word i must throw to my vocab...synchro...nice....how much you think a new synchro would cost? just in case the gear oil don't do the trick....need the cheapest brake discs and calipers too

scrimp? please explain that...down here i think we got different terminology for what you trying to say...thanks

scrimp

• verb be thrifty or parsimonious; economize.

— ORIGIN Scots, meagre.
well we, the scots, invented it at least.

basically going for the cheapest option avalible

The Syncro is part of the gearbox that stops the gears from crunching. It makes sure the cogs mesh together in Synchronisation. If they start crunching due to a bad selector then your syncro will start to wear and it will get worse. If you mechanic says its the selector then that is probably outside the gearbox rather than inside.

yeah you explanation makes perfect sense....you see the problem with Africa is that most mechanics have their own opinion of what the problem could be as opposed to actually trying to find out what the problem is. i gave it to another mechanic he drove the car and he explained to me as you have and said that the synchro is wearing out. the gears crunch when i short shift to 3rd and change down. however if my rpm are right...the gear engages with no hassle. what you think waynne?

In simple terms, the closer matched the engine speed to the gearbox speed, the less of the a job the synchro has to do, hence why it goes into gear just fine at certain rpm. (probably between 2000-4000rpm)

yeah round 2000-4000rpm but i usually gets in OK at around 3000-3500. so you think its the synchro too or could it be something else?

I've already told you on the first page. Thing is with a lot of car problems you can never be 100% sure without delving deeper (ie taking thing apart etc!) Try changing the gearbox oil for a good fully synthetic one first. It might hide the problem for a while.

If it is the synchro, the gearbox will have to come apart to change it, it's a specialist job really and not something I would do myself. Or replace with a better second-hand or recon gearbox.

Why do you want new calipers? Not necessary unless there's something wrong with your old ones. As for cheap discs etc, we don't live in Namibia.

I think you are on the right track. The difficulty will be tracking down what it was that caused the synchro ring to wear. keep us posted.
