Hullo there folks,

Regarding knowledge about cars, I'm a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5. So, please be gentle . Also, I live in Nottingham, so please bear that in mind whilst advising any local mechanics/specialists (happy to travel upto 50-60 miles on Saturdays though).

As the title says, I've got a beautifully maintained C220 CDI which has done only 33k miles, mostly by my wife. Now, however, I've got the steering wheel of this baby and I'm looking to crack the whip a bit to turn it into an UNDETECTABLE ROAD BEAST :D... (well, as closest as it can get to one at least :embarrest:!)

I've decided on the following 2 mods as soon as my service is done (2k miles still to go).

  1. ECU remap [Approx £250-£400]
  2. K&N Air Filter [Approx £45-£50]
However, I'm looking for some help & advice... hopefully in the form of answers to the questions below:

  1. Should I change the air filter BEFORE or AFTER the ECU remap? And, why?
  2. I'm after a fully CUSTOM remap (not a generic file update!) done by someone who is willing to spend 2-3 hours on my car to patiently map and fine tune all the settings.
Who would you recommend? How much should I expect to pay for the recommended person?
Google brings up MAS Performance, ECU-RS, GCL Tuning, etc... these are fairly cheap too - £250-£400. They might be good and all claim custom remaps, but I've no experience of them
Also, my gut feeling is that they're like AA... you signup with them and they send some regional idiot to come fix your car. I'm NOT after the village idiot who I won't even be able to locate once he's driven off. I'm after a specialist who has a proven track record and to whom I can take the car back should anything go wrong.
  3. I know of the benefits of the ECU remap. I'd also like to know what the pitfalls are, and, the chances of my car getting them.
  4. Benefits & drawbacks of DPF removal? Advice from anyone who's done this?
I think that's perhaps a bit of a ask (and a half!) at the first go... hope the serious folks don't get put off and take the time to read through my rant and are kind enough to answer my queries.

Many thanks in advance.
Regards,

Howdo.

If you're having a custom map do all your other mods first so that it can be tailored to take advantage of them. If you're going custom it might be worth doing the exhaust too to make the most of it.

There are plenty of places that will do custom remaps where you go to their site and the car will be put on a rolling road.

Cheers Yugguy! Fair point. Will do my other mods first.

I was thinking of doing the DPF removal and the ECU remap together, because proper removal of the DPF will also require certain ECU settings to be updated. Was thinking that it might be worthwhile to do them both and possibly get a decent deal on them - Pendle Performance seem to be offering one of these. Not sure what the exhaust options will be for my car... any ideas?

I had narrowed down to buying a Viezu Switch Box with 3 maps (Factory Standard, Max Economy, Track & Race Day). That was going to cost me about £500. Additional maps (Power & Eco blend, Max Power Road) were going to be £80 each over the £500. This was going to be done at the Birmingham branch - Approximate time taken was going to be about 2-3 hours. I was also going to get performance maps for the Power maps (no point for the eco ones!).

Then priorities got changed suddenly, as they usually do, for us not-so-rich middleclass folks who hope to win the lottery one day!

The plans have been shelved for a while. Will restart on them soon as my wallet permits. In the meantime, I've just got the car serviced (B service) and fixed a few small things (small? bloody well cost me shy of 800!). So, that didn't help either. And just since yesterday, I've got the bloody "ESP faulty" malfunction intermittently! Yay! Joy...

im Dean, live not far from notts but dont no any1 over there so dont think i no you! my Reg is C9RCY if youve seen my car, lol.
im thinking a 320 turbo will fit straight on mine, then im gona re-map it!

Nope! Wrong number I'm afraid! A mate of mine's got a 270 CDI CLK... He lives around a-d-l-z too!

Will keep an eye out for a C9RCY racing past ;p... Then I'll call the cops! LOL...!

Have fun mate.

PS: I did get the k&n filter fitted... Can hear a slight growl from the engine and the pickup's a wee bit nicer too.
I can feel the pull being a tad greater... Just wondering what the remap will do!

Ahh your from my neck of the woods. :)

think im gona get the K&N at the weekend. my dads got a 320CDI remaped, performance exhaust on a 55 plate! that goes like hell, it shows up focus ST once above 40mph, lol. some1 metioned to me about putting a 320 turbo onto mine, so im looking into a uprated 320 turbo to see if it will be ok.

ive seen a silver clk 270 keep going past mine (silver)lol. thats if your pal lives in ashby.
