hello people, something has been playing on my mind recently, why is it that in places like japan thier cheapest fuel is like 102 octain, whereas ours is 95, i know thier cars av gotta run on it, but why? the compression ratio on a standard car wouldnt warrent the use of such a resilient fuel? what do u recon?

The Jap cars seem to have pretty high compression ratios. 10:1 in some cases. Higher octane will work in all engines wheras you risk damage with low octane fuel in an engine that requires the higher stuff.

Still that said its only really the turbo's that need the 102RON stuff. Have you read our article on Octane - it explains the common misconceptions. http://www.torquecars.com/articles/fuel-octane-ratings.php (It was actually written by my wife who is our chemistry consultant ;))

The country roads are not always jam packed and they have quite a few tracks around :) It's a bit like people in Kensington who own Ferraris ;)
