What does it mean when the brakes make a grinding noise when you apply them?

It's not a squeek and they seem to be working on, there is plenty of pad wear left on them from what I can see?

Sounds like a high friction pad to me. Did this happen just after you fitted new pads?

Rough up the disc surface with a wire brush then do some emergency stops to bed them in and the noise should reduce.

Grinding noise usually means metal on metal contact so as a matter of urgency I would have them removed and inspected as the pads can have uneven wear.

It would not be the first time that a pad had been installed incorrectly= backwards.

Can you actually see both pads on each wheel? On single piston calipers there is a tendency for the inner pad to wear quicker. As this pad is often difficult to see without removing the wheel it can wear out whilst the outer pad has plenty of meat left.
