Best Honda engine

Thinking of getting a Civic but there are so many engine options around.

What are your thoughts on the 1.6 and 2.2 Diesel engines?

What about the 1.8 VTEC petrol engines compared to the 2.0 VTEC?

I really need better economy but I'm feeling a need for more power.

2.2 dtec will safely remap to about 180bhp on standard running gear with plenty of torque. If you need better economy but a bit of grunt that's your best bet. The 200bhp high-revving Type-R n/a petrol engine is an absolute belter but relies on revs so is not economical. Also I'd rather have a standard 2.2dtec than the 1.8 petrol.

All Civic motors are pretty damn good but .

It depends what you mean by best ?
From an engimeering or power perspective I would say the best ones would be the Vtec's
