Benefits/Power Gains?

How big of a benefit would there be from stripping down my mk5 Escorts 1.4 lump and giving it a thorough good clean and maybe even replace some parts? Am I looking at any significant power gains? What about doing the same thing to a 2.5 V6 Mondeo lump that I'm thinking of dropping in? Lol.

If the engine's history is questionable (and I don't know the history of this one) and it doesn't 'feel' right then ultimately disassembly, cleaning, repair and part replacement will be a good thing. Provided, of course, that you have the skills, tools, space, time and patience to do so properly. It's a skill I do not have and instead have relied upon liquid maintenance in the form of flushes and cleaners etc. The results can be stunning. They can also be disastrous.

Unless there is a serious mechanical problem then is might be best to leave alone rings and bearing shells, for example, as new components require running in and the process could destroy the engine itself.

You won't actually gain any power or driveability directly but you might well get the car back to it's designated power and torque outputs.

Even using an engine flush used with the oil before a change can be dodgy but if you're prepared to take off the pan and clean it all up after the drain then it's worthwhile. What you don't want is loads of olde worlde crap that the flush has dislodged circulating the engine and causing hitherto unknown damage as it blocks oilways and scores moving parts.

WRT to the 2.5 V6 engine (which was a sweetie). If you have it on the bench then dismantle and clean away. Just be sure to reassemble pot for pot, valve for valve and in the same orientation otherwise it will fail.

what HDI has said about the crud that has sat for so long is true. ive eard of engines running worse after using dechokes and flushes as the carbon that has blocked a worn seal etc has been moved causing the engine to drink the oil.
a full strip down and rebuild will prevent this but as said most dont own the tools to do

I don't personally have the know how to do it myself, but I have a mechanic and a kwik fit fitter who are willing to help me out and teach me about the inside workings of a car. As such, they have the correct tools. I really want to get into modding, but I figure it would do me better to understand the ins and outs of the engine before any mods so I can better understand what my mods will do. Sound like a plan?

its a good way of findin out how the engine fits togeather and in turn works.

only thing dont let the kwik fit fitter at it. itll be put back togeather - upside down, inside out and back to front.;) and thats only if your lucky, there the biggest scammer going

Don't let any Kwik Fitter anywhere near any car. It's a singularly inept organisation.

He's a good friend and very much understands that his company are a collective waste of space, but he has an interest in mods as well and has played with his own car, so i trust him with mine, lol.

If you know that person directly then I'll refute my previous statement. But I still agree with him in that KF is a waste of space. Hopefully he'll rid himself of Kwikfit ASAP and get a reputation he deserves.

Kind rgds,

P.

Always make sure you know what you are doing. Never start a job on a car unless you have a good overview of what needs to be done and you have the correct tools for the job. It does help when you have someone in the know to talk you through stuff.

Start off with servicing the car yourself then move up to the more difficult maintainance tasks like brakes, CV joints and wheel bearings and exhaust then go for the advanced stuff inside the engine itself.;)
