Which would be more suited as an alternative for a Leisure battery. A Diesel car Battery or a Petrol car battery. Thank you

Leisure batteries are different from normal car batteries.

Quote from the above site:

A car battery is designed to give out a large amount of power in a short space of time (starting the car) and then being quickly recharged. A leisure battery on the other hand is designed to store power and release it over a much longer period of time. Undoubtedly you can use a car battery in your caravan but it is unlikely to work very well in the long term.

I purchased a leissure battery a few years back and it only lasted a year if that. however the expense was too much, All we shall be running is a spotlight, maybe a 12v cooler box and a propex heater now and again. I believe there are huge diferences between diesel batteries and petrol batteries. ( I shall be buying from a scrappy) Cheers

The only real difference is the AmpH rating, needed for the heavy drain caused by turning over a high comp engine. We sell batteries with 2 and 3 year warranties. The same 3 year batteries are sold for diesel cars but with a 2 year warranty due to the heavy duty cycle.

It's also the charging behaviour. The generic car battery is designed to basically stay at full charge and be able to dish out 400+ amps to crank the engine. It's fully recharged within minutes of engine startup.

A leisure battery is a deep cycle battery. Designed to run for days on low drain without an appreciable increase in internal resistance and thus without appreciable voltage drop. It's then recharged when the trailer is hooked up to the car when it's being towed.

Deep cycle batteries have more and thinner plates than a car battery as they don't have to stand up to the 400+ amps load when starting a cold engine.

They're different devices really, despite that the operating principles are identical.

If the battery only lasted a year, it couldn't have been a very good one mate. Caravan batteries are designed to last a hell of a lot longer between charges than a car battery.

Also if you run a any form of heater of a car battery it will drain very quickly.

In a nutshell, end of discussion :)
