Basic: Picture Re-sizing

Todays standard screen resolution is 1024x768 pixels. Some use higher res, some use lower, but this seems to be the most used res. When using a BB such as this with this screen res, the largest you want to upload a picture is 800pixels wide, as otherwise the screen is widened and you have to scroll along to see the pic, and also any text posts after it aswell - which is not fun!

So bear in mid when resizing your pics, not to go wider than 800 pixels wide!

Now, for you folk with graphics programmes such as Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro (personally I use PSP7) resizing is easy. Just open that programme, open the pic(s) you want to resize and go to your RESIZE option. With most of these programmes you can choose a percentage or a pixel width/height to resize to.

For peeps who don't have these types of programmes and really don't have a clue what to do, then here's a crash course basics guide to help you out!

Every PC running Windows will have the basic MS PAINT programme in it (go to START>PROGRAMMES>ACCESSORIES>PAINT)

Once you have opened this programme, you can import the pic you want to resize (unfortunately as it is a basic programme you have to import, resize and save one pic at a time). Go the FILE drop menu at the top of the window and select OPEN. Here you can search for the picture you want to import.

Now you have your pic open, you need to resize. First thing is to press CTRL+E as this shows you the size of your pic in pixels.

Now, you need to resize it. Go to the IMAGE drop menu and select STRETCH/SKEW (quick key = CTRL+W) and you get a box with horizontal & vertical

Now, you need to enter a numerica value in the first box and then the same numerica value in the box below (ignore the 3rd and 4th boxes) - the numerica value MUST be the same as this is a percentage of the original picture). So forexample if you enter 50 in the first and second boxes then the pic will resize to 50% of the pics original size, If you need to, press CTRL+Z (undo) and try again with another number.

Now your pic is resized, you need to save it. Go to the FILE drop menu again and select SAVE AS. Another common mistake when using the programme is just to save it as the default file type (in this programme thats .bmp - bitmap image). This is not good as a) the filesize is massive and takes a long time to download, and b) not all uploaders or forums accept .bmp files.

So you need to save it as another filetype - namely JPEG/JPG. When you go to SAVE AS you get two boxes down the bottom of the window - the first is to type a filename, and underneath that is the selector for FILETYPE. You need to drop it and click the JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg, *.jpeg). Now press SAVE. Your pic will now be saved resized and as a jpeg under the name you gave it.

Repeat all this for all the pics you want to resize and post.

There is another way to reduce the filesize without reducing the resolution (dimensions), use outlook to email the pictures. It will ask "do you want to make the pictures smaller" say yes and you will have reduced file size pictures.

Also you can dump the pictures in word and save as a web page. This will then dump the images into a file at a smaller file size.

I think we might get prince to add a link to this post from within his gallery instructions as the 2 are closely related. (I just didn't want to have a whole page of stickies in each forum! ;))
