When the 240 serie appeared in 1975, a new engine was added to the well known B20 (Amazon, P1800, 140), the B21.

The main difference between the B20 (1986cc) and B21 (2127cc) is the aluminium cylinder head with over head camshaft, and crossflow type.

The new B21 is set with a single stromberg carb (B21A about 100hp) or a continuous injection k-jetronic from bosch without lambda sensor (outer USA, ...) (B21E, 123hp), and ke-jetronic with lambda sensor (O2 sensor) regulation (B21F about 110hp).

The B20 disappear in 1978 for the B19, which is also 1986cc, but based on the B21 (same cylinder head).

The B19A gives about 90hp with single carb, and 120hp with double solex in RS-sport 343.

In 1979, the B23E (2315cc) k-jetronic appeared in the 242GT and 244GLT with 140hp with the H profile camshaft.

The B23 took the place of the B21 in the 240 in 1981, B23A with single carb (112hp), and B23E with k-jet and K profile camshaft (136hp). The only version of B21 still produced was the B21ET k-jet with turbo garett T3 (155hp) or B21FT (US version, 140hp).

In 1986, all the B19 to B23 engines were replaced by 2 new evolutions: B200 (1986cc) and B230 (2315cc), globally the same as B19 and B23, but with new internal parts for less friction. Those are easy to recognise with the new black cylinder head cap.

In Europe, the legislation changed in 1989 and the cars had to have a catalysator and O2 sensor regulation, so the good experience of volvo in the states was an advantage to propose all engines with the LH-jetronic injection: B200F and B230F.

The best last version was in the SuperPolar with 136hp, in 1992-93.
