Are exhaust tail pipes just for show

Do you think that exhaust tail pipes are just for show? What are your favourite exhaust finishes?

I prefer the hidden exhaust that curves down at the back just behind the bumper so it is not visible at all.

It depends on the car. I think the noise they make can sometimes be for show. I love the look of a new exhaust when it's all shiny lol.

A nice looking exhaust pipe is always good to look at as long as it is not so obviously over the top. Twin 4 inch on a saxo comes to mind.
A good sound is probably better than going for the biggest one that can be fitted.

got twin single straight through stainless steel on mine, but as well as for looks it does release that bit more power from the engine, go for round everytime!!!!

I did hear some where that different tip styles can have an effect on the noise it makes,
Would I be right in saying this?

It certainly does. Just like a grammarphone trumpet the sound waves are channelled by the last bit of the tailpipe. Back box resonator size has a lot to do with the pitch of the sound.
