Almera engine knock

Hi everyone, I'm new to this, but I hope someone can help me!
I have a 1998 Almera and have just started to notice, in the last couple of weeks, as I pull away in first gear, there is a knocking noise coming from somewhere in the engine. It doesnt happen in higher gears, and doesnt happen if I just rev the engine. Any suggestions please?
