alfa romeo 147 immobiliser failure

i was driving down the motorway and the car lost all power, i got a warning when i tried restarting it saying immobiliser failure. anyone any ideas how to sort it thanks

Sometimes the fault descriptions on the car's own display can be misleading. My 406 once reported an 'ANTI-POLLUTION FAULT' on the MFD and it turned out to be nothing other than the accelerator pedal position sensor with one of the two resistive carbon tracks getting noisy.

Simply got Pug specialist to replace the pedal position sensor and it all settled down.

It also occasionally used to haemorage and the cruise control would drop out without warning. Switching engine off and back on and normality was restored.

I think you really need to get the fault code(s) read - this will give much more detail than the simple MFD message.

I know in some cars the key contains a transponder and if the battery goes this can cause the immobiliser to cut in.

For a speedy resolution I'd take it into an AR dealership and get advice from them, it is probably the sort of thing they deal with a lot and it saves a lot of guess work and hidden expense using a trial and error approach.

The transponder is usually passive. The battery simply provides power for the remote locking Xmitter. But I do think it needs a dealer or specialist to read the fault

Thats interesting, it looks like I may have been mis informed by a Toyota dealership then! The keys didn't have an easy access battery, no remote locking button either but apparently the battery needed changing at service time every couple of years or the immobiliser would cut in. (I wonder if this was a ploy to keep us coming back to the main dealers?)
