Hi all,

so i just bought a new 2012 hyundai veloster. and im wondering how i could add turbo on it.
i know there's a turbo coming out soon built into the car but i bought the non turbo one because i needed the car at the time.

We get asked this question a lot so have a look at these threads which cover the basics. I have to admire your ambition though!:D And I hope you pull it off.

Cheap turbos can be purchased from breakers yards which are ideal for a try it and see type project.

Please note that I don't think it is worth adding a turbo to an old car with a small capacity engine. There is nothing stopping you but the money and hassle will just not be worth the power gain you get. It is better to just buy a better car for your tuning project.

Adding a turbo is a major engineering task and without a kit with full instructions and all the parts you need there is a big risk of blowing up the engine. Expect to spend 50 hours upwards on a project of this type. This is not the sort of modification you should undertake unless you are mechanically competent and know what you are doing.

It is worth looking at superchargers as these are generally much easier to install than a turbo is.

The turbo thread covers most things but yours has a realtively simple and specific answer as they do a turbo version.

The only way to go (IMHO) is to buy the parts from the turbo version as these are known to work but before you start check...

Possible real problems
What about warranty- this will surely be voided
Does the turbo have the same engine and is it modded in any way such as compression ratio - If yes the idea is probably a non starter unless you want to spend lots of £££s or $$$$s
is the ecu different- if it isnt plug and play you need a completely new map or ECU

Easier things
Is the fuel system uprated - pump and injectorws should be a simple swop
Possible spark plug swop ( again simply use turbo ones)
You need to check the rest of the car is up to the increase in performance but again any neccessary parts should just swop over.

hope this helps , but as I have said in the article its isnt a simple job and the
above almost certainly wont be the end of things to do

It is often easier to just buy the turbo version unless you canfind a written off one that would be the ideal.

A reprogrammed ecu would prob yield nice gains....as far as a turbocharger goes, one could be added.....but boost would need to be limited for two reasons.....the internals of the na engine werent designed to handle higher boost levels and the compression ratio of the na gamma engine is high.....stock turbo engines have lower compression than their na counterparts.....direct injection would allow the na veloster to run higher boost than a typical port injection setup.

Thanks for your input friend, your post got stuck in the moderation queue; new members need 10 posts before being allowed to post any URL's or photos, this helps us to keep those cheeky spammers at bay.
