In a Front engine mounted, RWD car is the differential connected to the chassis, or is it just held in place by the shafts?

I know it's a really stupid question but it's been bugging me for a while and I've found no answer.

thing with 4x4 ones is they are a axle not a diff so a axle will be mounted with bars will try a pic when i changed my axle over on my old trans am

but a diff unit is held in by bolts bit like the engine is

a pic of the axle out of my trans am
you can see 2 legs that come off the axle and point forward they are the main legs holding it on should be longer but them ones have been cut

then there is a bar that goes across at a angle to stop it moving side to side

but most questions are not stupid questions

if you do not ask you do not learn but some are so silly its not worth a answer

If the person asking the question is not mucking about then the question is not silly, no matter how silly is seems to us 'experts'.
