Hi all just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on rovers 620 turbo? I've got a primera at the minute but i'm thinking of selling it for a 620 ti. Anyone had one or know anyone who's had one?

Pretty quick but prone to oil leaks and not very reliable by all counts.

i like them but whould not have one as its to small for me but have done loads of head gaskets on them its a rover engine so look for head gaskets if its high ish mileage its been done before

They go like s*** off a shovel when they're working. Unfortunately the engine's more Rover than Honda so they do have some issues.

Primeras are superb handlers - the Rover will leave the road long before the Nissan reaches its limits but they never offered a meaty enough engine in the UK in my opinion. I had a '98 2.0i Auto for 7 plus years and it NEVER went wrong and I piled 170,000 miles on it. The SR20DE engine is a peach, albeit a noisy one.

They are nice cars but
1) The T Series engine is prone to gasket failure and oil leaks
2) It is really hard to track down performance parts for them.

It would be worth looking at the Nissan 200SX instead.

Thanks for the reply guys I was thinking of the 620 cause its a cheap for door. I need four doors cause of my son plus i ain't got a big budget either but i want turbo power. I agree the primera engine is good but i want that rush of boost.

I agree with Wayne, but if you want to go down the rover/turbo route, why not go for the 420 turbo ?? If I'm right, the 620ti engine has 180 ish bhp and is a bigger car, the 420 has the 200bhp engine from the 220 turbo and really flies. I used to have one, it was fun but it has too much power for what it is !! Was good fun embarrassing cars as it was a 'K' reg and the turbo badge had come off !!

The turbo was fine on it . . the gearbox went which cost me £700 then the engine seized . . Nobody new why as it had plenty of oil. I sold it for spares for £500 :(

I would be tempted with a diesel turbo, chipped . . perhaps a golf 150 ??

or something similar to Waynes Audi ?? 4 door, lovely car, reliable (Back me up Wayne !!) and chipped will be pretty fast :D

my mistake, it was the 800 turbo that only had 180bhp.

both 620ti and 420gsi turbo had 200bhp. 420 being slightly faster 0-60 (6.2 secs if I remember right)

Just remember it really flew !! lol

I didn't know you had a tomcat Rover Paul! I had a 220 GTi which went through 3 engines and 2 gearboxes. It was finally tuned to perfection but I still wish it was the turbo.

The A3 from 2000 onwards has 4 doors and is a superb car. The engine is good for tuning and I really rate the 1.8T engine. The A4 will give more rear leg room and similar performance. It is also very reliable and has not yet let me down.

Change the gasket before you fit it and use the right oil grade. If you look after the engine it will look after you. Also you must make sure it is properly warm before booting it.

Oil leaks are more of an annoyance than a problem.

hi...i have a rover 420 turbo diesel..unfortunately the timing belts gone on it...
was wondering if the 620 ti engine and gearbox would fit in without too many further modifications?

mmm swapping from a diesel to petrols going to require ALOT of work. Most of the engine wiring to the ECU is going to need changed, not forgetting the ECU itself.
Fuel pump also needs changing

But hey and welcome to torquecars. Did the timing belt snap ? if so how much damage did it do ?

thanks for the reply..i've had the car towed to a nearby garage today and hopefully they will assess the damage and get back to me on monday..

most likely i will need an engine replacement..as stated by the mechanic..

i'm thinking about sellling as spares or repairs..

if the belt itself has went then chances are it may have taken some valves along with it.
might just be worth selling it as spares as the money to fix it could be worth more than the car

It is such a shame! Definately sell as spares unless you can get a cheap engine from somewhere. But to be honest it is a real pain doing an engine transplant on these due to the leaks you will get. There are a few specialist Rover breakers around so try these for parts and ideas (failing that see if they would bid to buy the car off you.)
