206 problems

Hey guys, last year I bought a 2003 2.0HDi 206 and had it remapped from standard(90bhp) to (125bhp). There was noticable gains through the gears but it only pushed 115mph, sometimes 120mph (It did 110 before remap).

Now, here is why I was baffled, I know another guy who has the exact same car, only a year older (2002) and his is hitting 130mph... his is remapped to 130bhp. Out of say 5 brake how can there be such a difference? I heard things like, get the car derestricted and get a new air filter, "being a year younger your car uses a different throttle system"(Sensors as opposed to a cable?) blah blah blah, atm, my car will do 110mph... could someone gives me any ideas and answers on any of this please.

No two engines that come out of the same factory are the same. They all have slightly different tolerances. This also applies to all other aspects of the car - gearbox wheel bearings these can all have an effect. Tyres can also affect top speed to a small degree.

Silly questions first - do you have a roof rack or anything fitted that alters the airflow over the roof? Is your trunk filled with heavy tools etc...?

The way an engine is run in can have a big impact on compression - the single biggest power seeper in most engines. His might have a better top end but you may find yours gets to 60 quicker. Gearing may be another factor involved. Different year cars also have different injector batches. THere really is so many factors involved and as Billyo says - cars off the same production line can have big differences in power. (Porsche have very stringent quality standards and all cars meet their minimum quoted power output.) :)

Thanks, my car is as standard as the day i bought it(No roof racks!) I think they both use the bosch injection as i have checked before, but on opening his bonet his engine looked different to mine and components were placed in different areas(Think this is to do with the year younger my car is, new design?). Well is there anything I can do to boost top end? What about tinkering with waste gate arms and things like that or are they best left to people with experience? Thanks in advance!

You really don't want him to win do you? :) Have you thought of checking the spec of the injectors. Pug did do a major engine revision but I'm not sure what year it is. Your car if different was probably set up for economy as this seemed to be what the makers were doing then.

I think the turbo design was different with variable geometry introduced as well but I'm not much of an expert on the 2.0 HDi. Waste gate changes etc if done wrong can cause major problems so I would consult a specialist for this. You may find that another higher spec turbo will bolt on and this will give the extra power you crave.

Sorry for the late reply: SO a higher pressure turbo will boost top end and boost bhp also? What else would I need to upgrade if I was to put a bigger turbo on? Seeing as there will be more strain overall etc etc :)

More air always means you'll need more fuel - the remap should take care of this if the car is on a closed loop system - although if you go for a much bigger turbo output you may need larger injectors and possible a bigger fuel pump.

Ask a turbo reconditioner if he can do anything - sometimes they can improve the efficiency of your stock turbo fairly cheaply. Ask Bell Engineering in Thanet KENT - they did a good job for a friend.

mmm I'm a fair bit from Kent :D, I live in ireland. Well what about smaller additions such as an updrade on the standard air filter? Diesels I know very little about, bought the car for the insane mpg and fuel consumptions but I'm greedy and want more speed for when I ever need it...? Who knows when I may take a wrong turn onto a track :D Also, I believe the car lags a bit, think it's turbo lag, sometimes the boost in 2nd 3rd and 4th is amazing, sometimes the car feels like its struggling and doesnt achieve nearly anything like it has done. I have read about cleaning the engine out, would that help much? I do alot of motor way driving and have also heard some people that would class them selves mechanics talking about opening the car up more often to increase its speed. I think the idea there is if you drive slow the car won't know what fast is? Thanks for all the help, it's much appreciated.

Diesels - especially turbo diesels need a good blow out on the motorway to clean up the insides. Different fuels can have a big impact as well on performance. There are probably some Diesel additives that you can add to the fuel to help clean out the inside of the engine. - Its also worth getting a compression test on each cylinder - see if they are all about the same - if not it might be time for a strip down and rebuild.

50k from 2003 until present, from when i have bought it I have put 10k on it, there was one previous male owner who tinted the windows and removed the HDi badge from the back, but that is all. Also, the HDi engine cover was missing when i bought it, perhaps there was something going on with the car when i bought it I don't know. What I do know is the garage I dealt with were out for every bit of my money they could get. I drive the car pretty hard, flooring it pretty much in 2nd and 3rd(I'm addicted to the silly amount of torque) and not that I speed in general on most areas, I keep to my 30's and 40's but would bend the rules slightly on 60's :D Could any of you give me ANY information on de-ristricting cars? Or is it a myth?

When people talk about de-restricting cars they usually mean removing the rev limiter or making it cut in a little higher or on some cars the top speed is electronically governed. So it's not a myth but these restrictions are there for a reason and it is generally to ensure that the engine lasts for 20 years or so. A remap will usually raise the rev limiter but you should think about getting the engine balanced if you want to safely raise the red line!

Sorry to keep hammering on at this but perhaps someone with my problem can read this post rather then make a new one :D I was looking at engine balancing, 140dollars it is quoted at on one site. I think currently at top end my car sits about 1.2k revs off the red line, so there is a bit left I guess and I understand that the rev limiter is there for a reason and not to be used daily, but if I was to go to a peugeot dealer and ask them to desristrict the car would they start asking questions and try to sell me enough parts to construct a new engine or would they do it with no questions asked :) Has anyone on here or viewing got this done before and want to share their story?

Main dealers are never a good idea for modifications. Warrantee cover can become void as soon as the dealer has a record that the car is modified. They also will take the line that the car is reliable and that if they did modify from outside of PUG standards they would not want the hassle of putting things right! The hidden cost of engine balancing is getting the engine out of the car and then refitting it and with the engine in bits it would be a good idea to have it fully reconditioned.

Don't worry about 'keep hammering on' someone will read your thread who has had the same problems as you and solve it just like that! (We get about 2000 new people on the site everyday so the chances are pretty high.)

ah ok :) Man there is alot involved in getting an extra 15 mph eh? I said about the deristricting because I heard on the grapevine the other guys car was doing the same top end as mine, then he got it deristricted, he then got it remapped after the deristrict, would this be the way to do it rather than have it remapped then deristricted? If you know what I mean.... :S

Don't think it matters either way unless the remap was completely custom. I presume though that a pre written ECU map was installed.

Yea, pre-written. I just thought they may tak einto consideration anything else done to the car. I think I am all out of questions now, you have been a great help. BTW is it you(Waynne) that sells the items from this website or are you just a forum moderator? The prices here are amazingly cheap compared to the places here :/

I own the whole site, program the back end keep the servers running and do all the hard work plus spend copious amounts of my time on the forum and dealing with emails. Ben (REDCOM) has just joined up to help with the background programming (with a new look site coming soon).

The shop is based on a deal we have with POTN so prices should be pretty good. Each time a sale is made through the site (phone sales dont count) we get a small commission which does help us to cover the costs of running this site currently at £500 per year! We don't get involved in the warehousing and dispatch and we are always looking to get better deals for our members and are currently investigating a number of other suppliers  .

We also have sponsor ads all around the site which often contain good deals and are worth investigating from time to time.

yeah i thought the topgear website would of been a rip off but it wasnt actually that bad! anywhere herewere i live you can expect to pay £130 per alloy + VAT without any tires... and when i say alloy they are ugly poor attempts :/ Pretty impressive that you have programming knowledge, car knowledge AND a wife (I think i saw you write you had a wife). Were do you find the time lol

I'm a man of many talents we've only covered a few here - I have no TV though I just never get time to watch it!!!!

TV's only fill gaps though, they stop you from getting fit and training like you wish you could only be bothered doing in your head xD BTW i can only get the car deristricted at a Peugeot dealer?

Someone said watching 4 hours TV a day is like spending 10 years of your life in front of the box. So now I just watch DVD's on my laptop about 1-2 hours a week!

Ironic that only PUG can derestrict the car. Let us know how you get on? If they ask questions tell them you do track days.
