well the new regs are out for the new look mot that will start 1/1/12

and well i am saving up to buy a lot of cars that will fail
i can see a lot of cars being scrapped next year is a lot more things that will come into it

wiring if its hanging loose or cut wires
a loose battery
any light that is on the dash board

and some not what you would think
drivers seat now has to be moved to see it it locks in more then one space
the steering lock make sure that works

most of the new bits that are coming in are bits we have been saying for years that should be part of the test
but i can see a lot of silly fails coming from places like quickfit and mr clutch the are silly now next year they will go mad and blow up

but if you want to have a look http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MOT Inspection Manual.pdf

all the bits that have a thick black line next to them are the new bits coming in

Anything on 'illegal remapping?'

Also what happens about emissions testing if there is an engine swap?

hehe, if I were an MOT tester I'd take great delight in using the Inappropriate Repair or Modification section on page 9 to rip off all the tacky, badly fitted spoilers and body kits and wretched droning pointlessly noisy exhausts on the chavs' 1.2 Corsas.

"Good news and bad news son, bad news is your car has failed spectacularly. Good news is you've made the front page of barryboys.com."

RE mapping
As I have said many time unless all the test stations spend a fortune on the software neccessary to check this it cant happen

And surely you cant make an engine swop illegal ( yet  ) and they will never be able to bring it in retrospectively ( like seatbelts) so I think this is another daft idea no one has thought through

Interesting reading the changes ahead. Good job I replaced the towbar socket plate as one had broken due to old age! One thing in section 5.4 that is a little ambiguous regarding the non-fitting of seatbelt pre-tensioners as a reason for failure. I have removed my seatbelt assemblies as I have harnesses fitted, therefore have fitted a resistor where the SRS plug was left unconnected, the SRS lights still self check and extinguish as they should. Now I can read this as a possible failure but in reality it is correct as afar as the final installation is concerned. However it also reads as if I need to refit the assemblies just for the MOT? What about airbags? I have bucket seats, therefore no side airbags. Some remove the passenger airbag and also fit a motorsports steering wheel, hence no drivers airbag, still seems a little wooly to me.

how does this work with the likes of kit cars or posher cars that have the seat custom fitted for the driver ? ie it doesnt move

I guess it doesn't need checking that it can lock in different places if it is fixed, that should be secure enough.

There is nothing in the PDF about tuning other than the car still needs to meet emissions regs, I'd still like to know how engine swaps will work though.

I'm quite happy to see they're checking speedos. If only so i know i'm not speeding when i go through a camera.

Thanks Yugguy, that did give me a chuckle :)

1 re mapping we will never check for this due to the fact of since you pluged your computer in it has blown my ecu now i am going to sue you

2 all the mods like exhausts ect is a fail now and if you was really anal. you would fail them but even quickfit or mr clutch are not that bad

3 engine change if you can prove a engine is out of a older car say you have a 2003 mondeo and you put a 1980 escort engine in it if you have a engineer's report saying its from a 80's escort you test it as a 80's engine but no paper work you test it as its was a 2003

4 air bag stuff not 100% on but reading it if its build to have a air bag a air bag it must have for the mot what you do once you leave the mot bay is up to you same as it is now

5 the seats if they are bolted in place and made not to move then thats how you test it

6 dont test the speedo's thats only for class 5 witch are lorrys then its all tacho stuff

I can't see anything new in there about pollutants, to be reasonable I've only look at study the new areas.

So decats are now illegal 7.1 Rejection 3!

Single wipers must park off the windscreen!

What sort of aftermarket exhausts are illegal? Do they need a CE mark or is it the noise they make?

Decats were always illegal in 99% of cases anyway weren't they? By that I mean the decat pipe itself wasnt but the fact that it made you fail the emissions. Everyone with one will just do what they do anyway, stick the cat back on for the MOT. Only way to catch those, if you want to, would be random road-side checks, and then there would be arguments and legal challenges as to wether road-side testing equipment was accurate.

LM can you please explain 2

2 all the mods like exhausts ect is a fail now and if you was really anal. you would fail them but even quickfit or mr clutch are not that bad

Before I comment at all on this I had better wait for you to explain

Yeah I was getting a bit concered here, about the exhaust thing, I don't think my exhaust is excessively loud on my 306 but realisticly if they are going to say they must be under x amount of db then how loud your exhaustis would then be purely subjective so I don't understand how they could fail you.

As for airbags, I would imagin if it has airbag in it it must function if not then it's a fail, I know plenty of people who have mad track day cars out of various air bag equipped motors and have removed them and all the air bag relanted systems so there fore shouldn't be failed.

this is what it says in the book as a reason to fail (now)

a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition

but i have never failed one for being to noisey nor have heard of one being failed

if the air bag system has been taking right out you dont test it same as stuff now

if you dont have a windscreen or wipers on switch or wiring for the wipers or washers you dont test them

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.
Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given."

This basically says that if they see a car with HID and can't check the self leveling system (which in most cases they can't) then they should just pass it...

lmao

most self leveling systems should go down then up again to set there selfs when you switch them on

but we all know what cars have hids and ones that dont

if you see a saxo or a 106 say with them on you know all well that they dont have anything on them

no worries for me and my 17 year old little basic corsa, my only battle is against rot.

Even if i have to take it off the road for a while i can use the works van/cars :toung:
