2007 Ford Focus - replaceable air filter setup needed

Well, I bought one of these:

and it did not fit my wife's 2007 Ford Focus in a number of different ways. Anyone have an idea as to how to get one that will? I don't want something shiny that will suck hot engine-compartment air, I want one that will slurp from the car's wheel-well as OEM does. The mass-air sensor is down there, which is part of the problem.

For those with question-marks hanging over their heads right now: yes, this is a model year of car without a replaceable air filter!

This sounds like a crazy design, I've seen people fabricating their own pipework from fibreglass and air conditioning ducting when stuck in a similar spot to you.
