Hi, i got my 34,000 gti t yesterday, and was wondering step by step what you would recommend for upping bhp? I will certainly get it chipped/remapped which should have it round 210, and possibly an airbox/filter, and fancy a nice loud dump valve, anything else?
FYI - a am a boy racer!

full exhaust and manifold and filter. (first stage really)
fmic
inlet maifold
boost controller (check on owners site about what standard turbo can take)
mapped

list is endless. but that is roughly what i would call a stage 1, or at least what im doing to my skyline.

watc out with the dump valve mate the standard 1 is a recirculating one pumps the air back into the inlet meaning it pre pressuised

the atmospheric ones dump to the air cause the car to run rich

is easily possible to add a second valve keep the original to keep the ecu happy and a econd one for noise

other option is to get the ecu custom mapped to save on the over fueling

you may find the following hepful
http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/vw bora/engine.html

its marked up for the bora but its the same engine anyway

gives you the chose of 220bhp or 317

waynne telt me that swapping the turbo would be a good idea as well as the bora/golf IV only get the 150 or 180 engine they are fitted with the K03 turbo the bigger one fitted to the TT 225 cupra 210 &225 as well as the s4 is the K04 turbo, as these cars are uped the turbos become cheap. i found 1 on ebay for £400 of an s4 brand new the guy had bout the 2 to replace but selt the car.

done some reasearch and found that 210 was avalible from the 180 engine with the K04 and 260 with a good remap duno about the 150 engine thou

yeah could be fun only prob would be tyres and lots of them

think most of their kits come with custom piping and exhausts

bit toooooooo much power for me ad be happy with 220 when a can get the money together

haha, thanks for all your imput guys, certainly has me thinking! Best idea sounds getting a Audi S3 turbo slapped in? how much of a job is that, or is it as easy as bolt on and go?

the s3 was 225 so should be a K04
think its a bolt off bolt on job although pipework may be slightly different

a seller on ebays says there direct replacement but a couldnt say

best idea would be to get the standard one off and check the pipes before trying to fit as it bigger and may be tight to get in the find out that its ot going to fit on properly

yeah the grip would be much higher but its still gan to struggle with all that power
granted the 4wd will be a great help booting it out of corners

as for the semi think you need helpp mate

This website says the 1.8 gti is the most tune-able? but apart from a chip, exaust and air filter it doesnt seem that there is all that much available? POTN has bearly nothing for it?

you would need to see specialist like for all cars that require high tune

waynne already mentioned awesome along with the link i gave you to the engine part of their website

for most cars general tuning companies like http://torquecars.potn.com isnt going to have masses of stuff available for all cars as most "boyracers" (using the term as the ones who race up and down the high streets bouncing off the limiter) just get the induction kit exhaust and chip done. its only the enthusiasts (ones that will do the car up for themselves and try and make it better all round to live with ,reliability ,and for fun) that will look further than that ie internals

ive had the bora just over a month now and the only thing i have been unable to find for the engine is

1. cams (found pulley set but no cams )
2. crank
3. clutch but i think its the same as the 1 for the 5 speed 'box if so sorted
4. money to do the thing up with

found masses for it by looking at vag tuning groups such as awesome ans jsb

heads, rods found on a lot of pages turbo conversions on all of them (inc a remade K03 turbo housing with different internals to give 240bhp without rewrite and still looks standard. dammed if i can find it again tho)
re-bores to 1900cc

think theres proof that its a tunable engine when 350bhp is common enough for them

dont know if youve seen it there a vid floating about on the net with a mk3 with the 1.8t engine kicking a supras a**e on the quarter mile beats it by over a second

Ok then, i wouldnt class myself as a boy racer then, as i know exactly how to drive a car! But like you say, with anything comes money. Wheres the best place to get a chip, but im from just outside london, so dont want to go MILES. Van Aken?

Isn't it always a matter of cost. You do get what you pay for though as many of us have discovered to our detriment.

Some remap companies will come to you and offer a mobile service but expect to pay a premium for the convenience. The main suppliers often have dealers dotted around the country.

Celtic Tuning, Revo, Angel, mobile chip tuning and RICA are worth chatting with. You really want one from a company that offers a range of power options rather than the installer of an off the shelf single chip for all models and you need to think about future mods. Will you be doing the Turbo and will the company offer a discount second time around.

Oh yea, i dont mind paying whatever as long as its good.
A chip seems the best and cheapest AND easiest way of getting a large amount of power. The name Revo pops up alot, so i may inquire with them

basic remap with revo is 207bhp

try living in lockerbie if i want anything major done am lokking at having to go away for a weekend or get it sent out to me and gert my local mechanic / myself to do the work

revo sound the dogs balls then! I will enquire, i certainly want one that has different settings, as i dont want the engine running high all the time, ie driving to work and back! This morning in sunny berkshire it was about 5degrees, and my car didnt like it to much, it was semi bunny hopping till it warmed up?! is this normal? i wasnt racing it, id persume the turbo was stone cold and needs to be hot?

dunno mine felt fine and it was 1oC this morning

are you using super unleaded as i found the car was really hesitant and didnt likie it when a was using 95ron
think the engine wil be sluttery until the knock sensors kick in

its been running fine, didnt change the fuel, but it hasnt been cold recently, so sods law! haha, thanks for the advice anyway. My old mans got a brand spanker sti, and he uses normal unleaded and has no problems whatever the weather

dont know if youve had it remapped yet but heres an email i recived from celti tuning this morning

Paul

Thank you for your enquiry with Celtic Tuning.

As one of the UK's leading VAG tuning companies we can provide for all your electronic and mechanical tuning requirements. As we write and develop our own software in house it allows us to be able tailor our maps to suit every individual requirement from road use to track use.

The 1.8 20v Turbo engines we can take from 180bhp up to 225bhp and from 174lbft torque up to 218lbft torque giving a very impressive performance gain and all within safe design tolerance of the engine and drive train components. Reviews of some of our 1.8 Turbo remaps are located here if you should wish to browse: http://www.celtictuning.co.uk/testimonials.html

All of our software has been developed using a MAHA LPS 3000 rolling road. This ensures performance accuracy, reliability and also that your vehicle is MOT compliant for emissions testing.

The cost of the remap is £375 all inclusive for which you would need to bring your car to Clydebank at our dealers location. This comes with a 14 day money back guarantee which gives you plenty of time to ensure it is exactly what you are after.

One item that we recommend fitting to the 1.8T engine is the Hyperboost HXC Compact Diverter Valve. The standard unit fitted to the 1.8T engine is produced by Bosch and uses a light material diaphragm which can break down in as little as 50,000 miles. The unit we suggest you buy is a piston type valve which provides reliable operation time after time. The function of the valve affects throttle response and boost levels, fitting a piston type ensures you get the best from your engine. The cost of these valves is an additional £95 with free fitting when accompanied by a remap.

If you wish to go ahead with the remap please forward us your contact details (address, Post Code and Phone number) and we will be in touch to arrange a booking very soon. Alternatively if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask as our technical team will be able to answer any questions you have.

Best Regards

Graham

cheaper than revo

Do they give a discount to Torquecars members? Its worth asking - see if you can set something up. I'm pretty tempted myself.
