I just purchased a 1995 BMW 740 IL. I bought from my neighbor. It is completely stock. I just had a service done. Man, those BMW dealerships are expensive! It has 120,000 miles on it. I just had the rear door seals replaced, valve cover gaskets, powersteering hose replaced, rear tail light, front "nostril", oil pan gasket. I imagine there will be alot more in the near future, but this should be expected with a car that is 13 years old. All and all, the interior is perfect, the exterior is decent. I am interested in performance mods, wheels, body kits, paint job. I have always liked the E38 since it came out, especially the 740 IL. As far as performance mods go, I am interested in a cold air intake, injectors, coils, plugs, possible supercharger???, don't know yet. Exhaust......just want to open it up! Let me know what you think.

Hi nice car. I've heard that the 4.0 are pretty expensive to run I guess when you have all the toys then some are going to break. I wouldn't use a dealership for an older car though. I would only condsider using a dealer if I needed to keep my warantee in place and get the service stamp. THere are qutie a few indipendent specialists out there.

I dont know much about the BMWs myself but Im sure hte guys in here will point you in the right direction when it comes to mods.

hey and welcome to torquecars mate. gansta would prob be the best man to have a look at think his is the 5ltr version, i know he was looking at supercharging it. and it could be done easily as the compression was so low 8.0:1 stock

I'll have a look are what bits are available for the 740 but I can understand why you went to a dealer as anything for a 7 is like rocking horse poo. Took me 4 weeks to get an oil filter for the 750 and that was from a main dealer.

HI mate,
Welcome to the site, the 740 is a bullet proff engine, Supercharging is defiently the option,
If you want any advice mate let me know and i wll do my best to source parts for you help you design the system and if you want fit it for you,

thanks

Cool, I will look forward to what you come up with. I am looking to repaint, I guess I want to completely restore the car. Interior I will leave alone since it is near perfect.

Yeah, sounds good. I have been looking at ESS tuning. They say with their performance upgrades, I can get 411 hp out of it. What do you think? I am interested in high performance injectors, coils, spark plugs, cold air intake, exhaust, front, rear spoiler, side skirts......and wheels.

Hi Mate,

Could you tell me a budget you have? I reckon we can get so much more power out of that for the money that you will spend with ESS

I reckon 600 @ 15 psi of boost!!

600 horsepower!! Wow, that woud be a lot of fun. How much is that going to cost?? It all just takes money. I can save for whatever you suggest. ESS wanted around $6000.00 for 411 hp. I kind of figured that there were other ways to build these 4.0s through a different underground. I pieced my 2002 Ford Excursion 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel that way. I stayed away from big name companies and got alot of bang more my buck! Let me know my options.

One more question. If we take it up to 600 hp, how would the transmission hold up? Rear differential? I have never owned a BMW before and don't know the history of their drivetrain. I see a lot of BMW 3-series 800-1000+ horsepower, and a guy can't help but wonder how are they keeping it all together!

Welcome to TorqueCars (Sorry i'm a bit late - i've been away!) You sound like a man with a plan to me. Keep us posted on your project. (ACE really knows his stuff and should be able to sort out something special for you.)

Thanks waynne, I have always wanted to own a E38 7 series. Now I have a project! I just can't leave things stock. Gotta do all those performance mods. Sounds like ACE knows his stuff too. I love these forums because you get real answers on what works. A few tricks and secrets are also appreciated. Another subject. My catalytic converters are rattling and after long road trips we get that "egg smell"! Is it that the catalytic converters are breaking up and can't trap everything, or oxygen sensors are not getting the air/fuel mixture right?? I also have been told that you really have no choice but to go with OE BMW cats. Is that true?? I have looking at high flow cats, but have heard that they are really not high flow. Also, I have heard that universal or direct fit cats, so called, just don't work. What do you guys think?

There are cheap high flow sports cats which are rubbish and expensive ones which are fantastic. Most are at least as good as the OEM ones but the power gain is only a few bhp so not as much as people claim.

Ok, this is how i see it, we drop the compression to around 8:1, put some forged rods in there, we wont need to do the crank as it should be able to take the power, uprate the clutch as it wont take the power, Run around 15 psi of boost as this will be about right fr around 600 BHP. The gearbox and the diff are a bit of an unknown quantity, the box i think should be able to handle it and the diff as well, as long as we do not but a much larger tyre on the rear. it might be well worth putting a LSD in it to handle it,

Would you prefer to run supercharger rather then a turbo? Both have good and bad points!!

Few more bits to go, but i reckon to get this amount of power will cost around £6-7000 to get this amount of power

ACE, you must be located in the UK? I am in the US, so how would we get the work done?? Or could you just sell me parts? By the way, the transmission is an automatic. I do plan on running 21" wheels both front and rear. Turbos are cool! I have a Ford Diesel Powerstroke and love to hear it whistle. What are the good and bad points to running a supercharger opposed to a turbo?

I dont know if ACE still watching this post, but i have a 740 4.4 here in UK, and looking to pimp that up a bit as well.
But i only want an extra 50-100 HP.
Any suggestion?
