Hi team.
I'm Simon or Gudgeon !?
In lovely South West Oz..
I have rebuilt my N/A 4G64 with high compression around 11.5/1, lightened flywheel, exhaust and pod filter.
This is just a daily and for fun including autocross / karnacross.
I am not looking to spend big $$$
It goes well, but even with 98 fuel I can't advance my timing past zero deg tdc before pinging starts.
So I am led to believe that an aftermarket ecu or piggyback ecu is required to increase my fuel ratio and therefore increase my timing to the desired ten degrees where it actually makes some grunt. I would appreciate advice on the cheapest options please.
I have a few other things I want to do to the motor before spending money on a tune.
I would like to find a mild cam for a good price if anyone can please help guide me to one?
I will have some work done to the head for flow and I have quad throttle bodies I am keen to fit with a custom manifold.
I don't believe I need to upgrade my injectors for this level of upgrade do I?
Thanks for your thoughts in advance...about ten degrees advance?

Keep reading the articles on our site and this forum... you'll pick up loads of good common sense tips and don't be afraid to post questions, were all here to share our knowledge and experience.

Have you looked into water injection to reduce pinging?

Evoscan might be useful to you for diagnosing and altering the ECU.

Find out if the car is running lean or rich when it starts pinging - that will give an indication of where the problem lies.

Has the air flow sensor been upgraded?

I would avoid doing the cam on this, you are running a very high compression ratio and are already hitting timing issues and pinging, the cam will likely just make this worse.

Does this have MIVEC on it?

Thank you Waynne there's a few good points there, much appreciated.
