How old is your project car?

No offence, but I spent ages thinking you had a Hummer or something from the avatar. In my defence I have the resolution up high so the image is really small...

why do people modify small engines?

Are you telling me you wouldn't like to see a 23% power increase? Because that's the way to look at it rather than "just" 14bhp. The Charade GTTI had a greater specific output than contemporary BMW M3s. Just sayin'!

Tour of southern France, Any Ideas?

Ferry to Spain for the win. 24 hours on a ferry is going to be a lot more relaxing than 17 hours on autoroutes. Also get to see a bit of Spain, and be refreshed for what seems like the main purpose of the journey. Done southern France from Dover-Calais crossing and the journey was not all...

At Last!. I have started on my car ;-) PART 2

Has the parachute arrived, yet? I was watching top fuel dragsters on Santa Pod's YouTube channel and one of the chaps was saying that when the parachute initially opens they lose 100MPH in 1 second, which sounds a lot to me, but some of those cars are going 200MPH+ at the line so they have to...

At Last!. I have started on my car ;-) PART 2

I've finally read every post in this thread. It looks like VR has been good for the car! I can still recall your photos on the wall in the office, and I have to say I'm impressed with the progress and hope to come and see it campaigned when (and that is when, not if) it is. It'll probably be...

Rochdale death crash youth boasted of 142mph M62 drive

I used to do emergency out of hours stuff, and on a few incidents I had to arrange clearing up after fatals. Generally by the time I got to site it was just blood and debris that needed clearing up and I had to get a specialist contractor to deal with the blood, but I had been out to a couple...

    Your first car

1988 Fiat Panda Super (999cc). It cost the grand sum of £180 from eBay, and £750 to insure third party, fire and theft. I can't even remember the nature of the crash, but I recall replacing the bonnet and offside headlamp. Couldn't find the right grille so I made one from Halfords best...

    vw sludge problems

I saw an independent video review of Seafoam on YouTube. Young American chap with a Honda Civic Coupe. He took the spark plugs out and stuck a camera into the combustion chamber so you can see the state of the pistons before and after. There was certainly a visible difference.

Steve, I'm working my way through this thread from both ends(!), from the front I think I'm only on page 8, but I'm getting through them! I noticed you have been maching components for wheelie bars. I wondered which events you would be campaining in - this isn't going to be a straight...

    Toyota Mr2

That must be a ZZW30 (Mk 3) then with VVTi - I think that's 140bhp in a car weighing a whisker under 1,000kgs. I take it that's the Roadster (AKA Spyder AKA MR-S) version if the top comes down.

    Toyota Mr2

1587cc 4AGE and then the supercharged 4AGZE in the Mk 1; the 20v silver and black tops were popular conversions, but not standard. 3SGE and 3SGTE being the NA and turbo versions of the Mk2 MR2. Toyota made some great cars throughout the late 80s and 90s.

    Petrol heads in your family

My dad worked for Ford for 35 years which I think almost completely crushed his interest in cars. When I was born, he was driving an extensively modified Hillman Imp which he had bought to replace his Mk II Jag as it was a gas guzzler and insurance headache. I believe he also marshalled at...

    Funding a car purchase

My current car cost me a litre of whiskey, so I used my credit card to buy the whiskey. I've bought most of my cars from friends or family, so the better ones I've paid in installments. Back in the olden days (pre-2008) the bank used to tell me I needed a car or a new kitchen and then loan...

    Toyota Mr2

I had a Mk 1 (AW11 for the afficianados), and when I first got it, it seemed like a rocket despite only having a 1.6 NA and the vaccum tube on the TVIS was leaking so it didn't come in until about 4,000RPM. Mind you I had come from a 1.3 Mk 3 Siesta. Had one moment of the pendulum affect, but...

Country lanes with no passing places

Of my many long weekends in Cornwall looking for nice surf spots there was only one when I went in my Discovery I, and to begin with I wasn't keen on these lanes, especially as it the Disco was widest car I've ever owned, but after a while I realised the ground clearance and elevated driving...

Paying to park is killing towns

Well Colchester Park and Ride is a success, as I believe it it still free over a month after opening in an attempt to attract business. It's supposed to be £3.00 per person (I still don't understand why it can't be per car), but you can park in the middle of the town for an extra 50 pence...

    Mitsubishi 4G93/T Engines

Just wondering if there are any Mitsubishi specialists out there that no what the big differences between these engines are. My understanding is that there are a few variants of the 4G93 which seems to have gone into a lot of Mitsubishi derivatives including Protons. As far as I can tell...

what is it with people and speed cameras

It was a long time ago I managed x3x mph under Rayleigh Weir. I don't usually get on my high horse about speed limits but I think the 50mph on the A127 and the 60mph on Great Notley bypass are the two stupidest speed limits in Essex. Undertake lots of people on the stretch of 40mph on the...

    ae86

That won't cost less than £10k! Standard engine in an AE86 is the 4A-GE; 90 odd torques depending on who you read. It used to be possible to get the supercharged version imported for about £1,000. The 4A-GE is the same engine as in the Mk1 MR2 (AW11) so it should still be(relatively) easy...

Whats the cheapest car to get into drifting

Get an older 5 series BMW; they are dirt cheap to buy and should have plenty of torque to get started. Once the right tyres and chassis/suspension mods are there you're away. Had an old 518 and that would easily go sideways if you wanted it to; that was an underpowered model in street trim.

What is the worst noise your car has ever made?

I'll agree with the silence bit. Otherwise hearing the loss of compression on 3 after driving through a flood in my diesel Fiesta and blowing the head gasket and bending the con rod, or the loss of compression on 2 and 2 in the Panda when the metal web between them blew out. Surprisingly got...

    Driving in Floods

Really should have read my own advice before killing my diesel Fiesta. Mind you, taught me a good lesson. Wheneve you drive a new car take a look under the bonnet for the cold air feed - my Astra is clever as it's just under the bonnet. The Fiesta less so as it had a drinking straw at the...

    Can I fit a different model's bumper to a 440?

My Volvo 440 got clipped just over a year ago, resulting in the top offside corner disappearing. Duct tape got it through its last MoT so I thought I ought to pull my finger out and get the bumper replaced. I've trawled eBay daily for months and can't find any 440 bumpers (and of course mine...
