    Hybrid vehicles in motorsport survey

Hi, thanks to those who have completed my survey so far, unfortunately as the hand in deadline is looming I've closed the survey to give myself time to analyse the results. Cheers

    Hybrid vehicles in motorsport survey

Hello. I have created a survey for my dissertation regarding hybrid/environmentally friendly vehicles in Motorsport and it would be great to hear the opinions of all people involved in Motorsport. Should not take any longer than 5 mins and will be a great help with my project. Thankyou in...

    Valve lapping - Diamond paste?

Nice one cheers, there's no cast iron on this head so that's alright. The seats are actually in good condition so honestly I don't think I'll even need coarse, just find a finer paste, maybe diamond and see how it goes. I just wanted to check that diamond paste isn't a snake oil kind of deal.

    Valve lapping - Diamond paste?

Hi, so just about to start lapping the valves into the head as part of the build and I'm just wondering on what lapping paste would be best, I know Chemico coarse/fine stuff is alright. But I've heard of a few people talking about diamond lapping paste, something like this...

    Intercooler piping

It's not stock, but at the same time it's not massively modified, sort of 4/5 psi boost above standard, modified intake and exhaust and rebuilt turbo with billet impeller. Yeah hahaha it's front mount. I think people say for the modifications I've done in this car people usually get around...

    Intercooler piping

Hahaha, fair enough I probably am. I'll leave this open anyway just in case anybody wants to have any input.
  7. V

    Intercooler piping

Yeah I understand and the intercooler itself is fairly small I've not just gone bigger is better with that it is well sized. I'm just wondering with the piping is it just possible that a bigger diameter corner the slower moving air would create slightly less turbulance and therefore not impact...

    Intercooler piping

I'm not doing too much on the exhaust other than 3 inch downpipe and front pipe, I am using silicone bend reducers just obviously flipped to step it up, I did think of only stepping it up just before it is needed, i.e. before the intercooler but I am just thinking increasing the size on the exit...
  9. V

    Intercooler piping

The steps I am using are all silicone and they are never any more than 10mm each so they are very smooth and gradual. Basically now my only concern is after the intercooler where it jumps up from 70mm to 76mm then back down to 70mm for the throttle body, is that just going to make me loose...
  10. V

    Intercooler piping

Hi I'm just wanting a second opinion on the sizing of my intercooler piping. Basically from the turbo it is ~43mm internal to ~53mm external, then the intercooler is 68mm external, then the throttle body inlet is ~72mm internal - its a rubber flange type thing so a metal pipe will have to go...

    Detailed engine spec needed.

True but I don't think it has to be the engine itself it's more assessing the road car vs race/rally car variants but then focusing on the power train alone so the cortina is possible
  12. V

    Detailed engine spec needed.

That's a pretty good point, I have already started gathering a load of specs for the escort cosworth mind you but I haven't started the assignment yet so I will do this on the side and see what I can find and then choose between the two. Cheers
  13. V

    Detailed engine spec needed.

Hahaha yeah true. I guess if I can't find what I truly need I'll have a trip out and talk to someone or see if there is anything of use in the student library, I'll leave this post open though in case anyone else is able to weigh in Cheers
  14. V

    Detailed engine spec needed.

The cosworth would be a good one, some great rally cars are powered by that of course so that'd be fun. In terms of explanations I can obviously do turbo I'd just have to do a load more research as most of my knowledge lies within N/A, I suppose there's nothing wrong with expanding my mind Yeah...

    Detailed engine spec needed.

Hi basically I am now doing a degree in competition car technology and my current assignment is to take a race car and compare the engine and gearbox to its road counterpart and assess how each little spec had been altered for use in race. I do want to do a car from a slightly older class like...

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Yeah I've heard quite a bit about them, I think either old or current wrc and f1 teams use them so they can't be bad and they are quite a popular choice with people running ITB's and twin carb setup I had a look at the apexi filter on my swift and imo it's too small and they don't really have...
  17. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

I like that it is an enclosed filter but there may be size issues for my car as there isn't a lot of room so I'll have to see what sizes they have available and measure up to see if they could fit
  18. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Haha nice, I'm a bit more of a fan of slightly modern-ish stuff like 80s/90s (although I do still love classics) but for induction roar I would put down a Toyota 4age blacktop or a redtop with aftermarket ITB's, lovely stuff. And again I am with you on that my mate has a Honda civic with a...

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Yeah it is a kick in the testees but hey ho
  20. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Well at my current age of 19 I am very much interested in the sound ;) I suppose since it is turbo there won't be an induction roar but it can change how much of the turbo spool you can hear which . Is . Just . Fantastic
  21. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Yeah to be honest it won't be a highly tuned engine, at some point I will be putting the boost up a bit, probably around 14-16psi is apparently a safe level of boost, I know it won't make much of a difference in power but then there is filtration and sound.
  22. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Fair enough, might do what I mentioned earlier and switch the filters around to at least give me an idea of what differences I can expect. So currently for me it's itg, k&n, apexi and hks.
  23. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

Yes I know but I already have an apexi and a hks foam filter so I could just do it with those two for now and then maybe look at the itg, im not doubting anybody's knowledge I'm just saying if I have a bit of first hand experience with it I can choose my own. Yeah k&n is popular but it's just a...
  24. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

yeah true anybody can say anything on the internet, kind of a big problem really. I guess its more of an experience thing that I'm just going to have to try out for myself. think I might try it, I still have my suzuki swift so might just swap them over and see if there any noticeable difference...
  25. V

    Best material/brand induction kit?

I'm just wondering what people think are the best induction kit brands or materials, I sort of decided that I was going to go with itg but then I read elsewhere that foam is actually no good in terms of flow and filtration, next along for me would be apexi as I have heard a lot about them (and I...

    What parts will I need.

Yeah I have read a little about that, is there any additives that are strong enough to make that much of a difference?
  27. V

    What parts will I need.

Hi, at some point in the near future I may be able to put some nice shiny parts into a 2zz-ge engine, my main thing is with the pistons, I kind of want to splash out and get cosworth pistons, that will give me the options of 12 or 14:1 cr, I want 14:1 but wi that be too high for a road car? Also...

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Haha fair enough, yeah I thought an inch wouldn't be too bad. I will have to do some googling then
  29. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Actually does just one more thing does the distance from the filter to the MAF sensor matter? I know the actual position of the MAF sensor is important but would it make a big difference if I cut down the metal tube a bit as that would give me a bit more space around the filter for the airbox
  30. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

And yeah I already knew about ram air not having an effect at lower speeds So 1:2 to 1:3 is that the airbox is 3 times bigger than the intake?
  31. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Ok awesome thanks that's exaclty what I wanted
  32. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Ah ok, so basically don't go crazy with intake sizes, don't bother with big to small etc
  33. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Can I just check I've got my head around this Big intake to small pipe = higher velocity low pressure Big intake to big pipe = large volume but low pressure high velocity? Small intake small pipe = low velocity high pressure low volume? Small intake big pipe = i would've thought that's low...
  34. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Ahh ok I just did a bit of googling and what I was after doing will increase velocity but loose pressure
  35. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Oh and if I'm doing more than one should it be that all of them add up to less than the air box CS area or would should they be smaller individually
  36. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Oh ok fair enough I just thought that an intake with a bigger surface area would let more air into it and then if it is continuously forced into a smaller pipe that would increase the pressure as oppose to an inlet that is the same size as the piping afterwards So basically does that mean make...
  37. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Ahh ok fair enough Also about the pressure thing I was actually thinking of just leaving the back open as I was more thinking of just making sure the filter is protected from hot air and has a nice supply of fresh air passing over it At the moment (possibly later on) I don't have an exhaust or...
  38. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Really? I thought if I had a huge one that let's plenty of air in then into a smaller pipe that will them lead into the air box that will make more pressure as you are forcing much more air into a small pipe than you would with a smaller inlet
  39. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

Yeah that would be the best place at the grill I won't cut into any body colour plastic, I'm taking about the black plastic fog light surrounds and possibly cut a hole next to the fog light or take the bulb and lens out and use the predrilled hole for that
  40. V

Making an airbox for a cone filter

basically at the front grill if I remember correctly the radiator only takes up about 3/4 of the grill and there is blanking plastic over the grill, I think thats just to stop water splashing onto the exhaust manifold, and so hopefully I will be able to just put a nice large intake there, maybe...
