For high mileage motoring diesel is still the way to go. I no longer do high miles and still prefer to run a diesel and havent had any problems. Just ensure you get the car with the better emissions control kit ( some are a lot better than others) and get it hot regularly so it can control the soot.
Your owners manual should tell you how much oil to add when the light comes on. I think it is one litre or 1.5l to go from min to max. I think BMW screwed up with this.

My old diesel boat engine needs about 30 secs to pre heat and then always starts, even after the winter lay up. Modern glow plugs are very different and very efficient, and more expensive.
I have used Shell V-power super diesel for a long time. I cant say it made a any difference to the performance, maybe slightly better mpg, but I have never had any engine or dpf problems, ever.
Start with the easy stuff, are all 6 cylinders that are not working on one side? or are they on both sides. Is there separate ignition for the two banks maybe one side is faulty?
