I have a chance to get a Peugeot 106 xsi 1.6 for my first car, it has full race interior with bucket seat and harnesses but standard on the out side with no mods so far, but it is very clean with nothing wrong with it and its cheap as well, only 500, so i was wondering what you think because i dont know much about the xsi. It is probabley going to be between this, a bora or a 316i. Any thoughts would be great thanks.

Peugeot makes good cars, they're reliable and strong for the most part. But the 106 is a bit of a baby car.

I'd take either the VW or BMW without hesitation if your funds allow. Both will be much nicer places to be sitting in than a 106. A 316i is a bit spineless performance wise, and a 1.6 Bora very little better.

However, they're worthy cars.

Better to arrive late that to not arrive at all. Even better to arrive late in comfort and style.

Check out the VAG Bora firstly. They're very very good cars indeed. At a push I'd take it over a BMW 316i.

my choice would 100% be the 106 its nippy and nimble!!
the bora is useless performance wise unless it has a turbo or a v5/6 engine + as standard they dont handle well!!
and the bmw 316 i think hdi is being very kind using the sword spineless! useless is better suited!

i have the bora and would say go for the 106. the bora is a fat lump the wife has the higher powered 1.6 golf - not much lighter - and its a complete waste of time trying to pass anything other than a tractor really.

downside i can see with the pug is the insurance for it or more so the interior mods. racing interior to me would mean roll cage which will most likely add a hell of a lot to the premuim

Check the insurance costs for a modified car. A stripped out interior is probably something the insurers would not like and will probably load the premium.

The 106 is great fun in corners though and I don't think you'll find much of a better first car.

Hdi you make agood point but i'm only looking for a decent first car so the peformance part would't worry me to much yet as it will cost a fourtune on insurance. I'm looking for a nippy little thing or big thing that handles and drives well and will be fun to drive it. If you dont think the 316i or the 106 is a good choice what would you recomend?

I was on the VAG fourm looking at the boras and i didnt hear many good points about the handleing or peformance on it so that choice might be out the window unless there is any good points about.

How does the 106 xsi handle and drive? Is it a nippy little thing or will it get left behind from modern little hatches?

Thanks for all your replies

good point about the bora. extremely strong did you come across any that had been involved in acidents ? - also look for A3, TT, seat Leon, golf and skoda octavias . some have ben hit very hard and folk walk away with very little issues.

another good point for them is they do handle better than the golf simply due to the longer length - but the handling still isnt as good
power is pretty much non existant 103bhp or 105bhp from the 1.6 in something that weighs 1330kgs give
75bhp/ton
that and the earlier 1.4 and 1.6s had a gearbox issue where the rivets would shear off

Another thing that i was thinking of if i'm not going to get much peformance out of any of them is to get something like a bora or something to add style mods to just to make it look good if i'm not going to get much peformance out of any of them?

None of the cars you are considering is actually painfully slow.

If you want some reasonable performance then it's better to buy a car that delivers at least some reasonable level of the stuff in factory tune. Insurers are not especially charitably disposed towards modified cars. Even if the modifications don't enhance the performance at all you might still find that the underwriters will load your premium anyway.

The 106 handles very well in standard form and gets a bit a of a lick on, but it's not lightening fast, I'd go for that over a bora any day, I don't find them very inspiring to drive, the golf mk4 either,

the BMW 3 series seems to only make sense from a 318is upwards (depending on age)
the 318is isn't a hugely quick car either but it's not bad at all, I would be happy to have one as a daily driver and they can be bought for £1500 so a bargain motor really,

Go for the 106 though, you won't regret it, it's by far the most fun out of the cars you want,

Well, it totally depends on what you intend to use it for, I know my way around pugs fairly well, but obviously part to upgrade on a road car will be shorter than a weekend/track car,

i know it has a stripped interior, but you may just want to use it as a daily driver though,

but it does beg the question, why is it so cheap?

To be honsest i think the fella selling it is getting a new car and just wants some money towards it. Its a sound car, my uncle is a mechanic and he works with the fella selling it and he had a look at it and said everthing was in order so it sounds good anyway but i didnt get a chnce to drive it yet, only seen some pictures of it.

I'd like to use it as a daily driver but yet still have enough power there when i want it. I'm not 100% sure that it is stripped out i think he could have just been talking about bucket seats, racing steering wheel and maybe some harnesses but i'm not sure to be honest.

Do you think i should focus my attention on the handeling and upgrade the suspension or fous on moding the engine?

I'm getting rid of it i was crazy to think i'd get insured on it. It is a lovley smooth ride though and its fast. There not to common so it kind of a sleeper and thats the way i like my cars pretty much standerd on the out side, with some exceptions to smothed bumpers and a clean look, and have a modded engine and great handeling. Shame to get rid of it though.

To be honest you just need to modify, in moderation in both areas,

there are plenty of things to like about the 106 in standard form however, it can be improved on, suspension wise, powerflex do a complete set of suspension bushes for the 106 (unlike the 306 where they did a half ass job)
I mean ARB bushes and front wishbone bushes and rear beam mountings,

Spoox Motorsport do a wide array of suspension mods, they have a Bilstein group n suspension kit (dampers) that will work wonders for the car and I would personally advise getting Eibach springs,

engine wise, you say you want a daily driver, then turbo would be a good way to go, Speak to DP engineering, they specialise in turbos for pugs and citorens, something else to consider as well if you want more power is to upgrade the driveshafts as the standard ones on 106's are known to be weak so some 2 piece items are preferred,

there is far more you can do with these cars and I've just touched on some stuff, if there are any specifics you want to know about that I haven't covered (or anything else) then just holla....

Well I own a 306 which shares the same chassis and under pinings as the ZX so I know what you mean, they ride really smooth, it's something PSA have always been good at which no one else really matches, (smooth ride and tight handling)

but at least you are getting another one :)

it's not a fast car. It's undoubtedly lively though and the ride comfort is fantastic without buggering up the taut steering response.

Do you really want to replace this with a 106?

I kind of need to insurance wise because i wasnt going to get insurance on the zx. Shame thought liked that car:( But the 106 isnt realy that bad is it?
