The Yeti, represents a great amount of innovation on Skodas part, and become a new class of vehicle in the Skoda lineup.

When you look at the tech specs things start to get interesting. The petrol versions of the Yeti use FSi turbocharged engines and produce power far in excess of what you would expect from an engine of similar displacement.

As a result all Yeti engines respond well to tuning, even the TDi engines can become petrol like in their power delivery with a simple remap.

So lets see what the best Yeti tuning modifications are. Skoda Yeti are popular cars and with a few sensible performance modifications you can greatly increase your driving enjoyment.

A popular car for tuning up is the Yeti and our members have some interesting projects on the go.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are usually your first port of call for the Yeti. We suggest that you fit uprated suspension and lower the car by 20-30mm although this depends on the size of alloy wheels that you choose.

The Yeti was designed to ride high, a bit like an off roader car crossover should, and it doesn't look right if it is lowered too far.

Improving the handling for lots of DIY modders first priority in your Yeti tuning project.

Adding a little negative camber on the fronts and a few degrees of toe in to improve stability or toe out for better cornering, will radically improve your Yeti in handling and cornering.

Drop the car optimally somewhere in the region of 21mm - 40 mm and fit sports stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.

Tuning modifications.

Our aim in Yeti engine tuning should be to increase peak power and Torque from around 1500rpm and extend the usable power band to around 5500 rpm (4500 rpm for the 1.2).

The smaller 1.2 Turbo engines do not provide quite as much of a return in terms of power from tuning although you can still expect to see around 30% more power. When you start with the 1.8 or the 2.0 TDi the power gains are much larger and cost around the same.

Turning our attention to the Yeti's engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

With just a few mods you can convert your Yeti into a fun car, and end up with a practical family car that responds well when pushed hard on the track, on road and OFF ROAD.

The best power gains come from larger engine sizes. The more you start with the bigger the return on investment so engine swaps are good value mods for small engined cars.

These are the tuning kits are usually fitted by our members, decide how far you wish to go in your tuning project before you get started.

Getting the right uprated parts for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport mods just won't work well on the road hard to control in slow traffic.

Best Engine Mods for your car

  1. Engine Tunes - engine tuning/remapping provides the most advantage in terms of cost savings,  aftermarket ECUs, and piggyback ECUs are all alternatives.
  2. Fast road cams are one of the most significant mechanical changes, but they must be installed by someone who knows what they're doing and they are not always easy to source but you might find a local firm to regrind a stock camshaft.
  3. Intake and Exhaust - Note that on their own these mods will NOT ADD POWER in most cases, but they can help enhance power after other mods by removing the restriction.
  4. Upgrades to turbochargers and superchargers - forced induction is the most efficient approach to increase air supply, allowing you to burn more fuel and make more power. It is one of the most costly upgrades but provides the best gains.
  5. Head work - The goals of porting and flowing the head are to get air flowing into the engine while removing flow restrictions and turbulence.

Typical stage 1 mods often include: Alloy wheels, Lighter flywheel, Engine Tunes/Remapping, Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Panel air filter.

Typical stage 2 mods often include: fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, Power/Sport clutch.

Typical stage 3 mods often include: Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Sports gearbox, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing, Competition cam.

You really need to keep as much low end torque as possible and aim for a long power band rather than a narrow top end power hike.

The aim of our pointers is to give a limited introduction of tuning modifications and point you in the right direction, our forum is where you can ask for more detailed advice and tips on your modified car project, the best uprated kits and all aspects of modding cars.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest performance gains for your money as far as a single modified upgrades goes on a NA (naturally aspirated) engine.

It improves the intake and exhaust durations and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a remap. We'd also caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this affects the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Using higher octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Skoda project after fitting other motorsport mods. Higher capacity injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

If you are increasing your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

A fast road cam will be one of the best power mods you can do mechanically to the FSI engine.

When pushing up the power you will need to pay attention to the fuelling. More power needs more fuel.

The VAG sourced FSi injection is a good fuel system and can deliver enough fuel for most modest tuning projects. For larger power gains you may well need to uprate this.

Yeti Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

The next area for modification our Yeti owners pay attention to is the intake and exhaust. For small Yeti engine sizes go with a washable panel air filter. IF you want an induction roar then fit a full induction kit (cone filter) but you must ensure it has a cold air feed or you could be losing out on some power.

Sports exhausts will certainly help air flow through the engine but do not go too large or you will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches for best results. A sports catalyst will also do much to improve the engines breathing and will free up some top end power.

Head work including a polish and port and 3 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine allowing more air to enter the cylinder.

Your clutch can seriously let you down if it starts to slip and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40%. Fit an uprated clutch to avoid power losses through the transmission.

The VAG group turbo charged engines are just begging to be remapped. You will see big power gains on most turbo engined cars including diesels making a tune/remap one of the most cost effective modifications.

Yeti wheel modifications.

Alloy wheels will help the brakes cool down and are usually lighter than the steel ones. Large Yeti alloy wheels can decrease performance though.

If you get big alloy wheels you will be changing your final drive ratio, and this will reduce your acceleration. So aim to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the same as supplied from the factory.

In all cases we do not recommend going above 19 inches and would recommend you have a smaller rim and larger chunky tires for that off road look.
