Whats the fastest you've ever been in a land vehicle?

Indicated 158mph at the wheel of a 1990/H Porsche 928 S4 on the A329M between M4 Jct 10 and the A4 east of Reading (past the Winnersh Triangle industrial area). Allow 10% for speedo error then it's 142mph true at very worst.

Dont' recommend it tho, too much is at stake if it really goes wrong.

On a track day we were in a TVR and that was pulling pretty silly speeds around 160 mph. I'm really not comfortable at speed on a road - as HDi fun says there is too much that could go wrong - I've seen cars get a blowout at these speeds and just roll off the road.

Hmmm. Now I feel slow. 130mph on the M1 Southbound in an Audi A3 1.8 Turbo, a company car, on my way to pick up a client from Stanstead Airport, accidentally racing an Escort Cosworth.

No, really, it was accidental. I was overtaking a stream of traffic at 80mph when I drew level with the Cossie at the front, and he decided he wasn't going to make it easy for me. So I speed up, he speeds up, I give it some more, he gives it some more, I look down at my speedo and it's definitely over the 130 mark (although theres plenty left before redline) but at that point I decided it wasn't worth my license and admitted defeat.

Can I just point out that driving at break neck speeds on the publick roads is both irresponsible and stupid! The only place people tend to get to quicker after they have cought up with all the traffic is a hospital or the morgue.

At our local airstrip I got my old 1982 BMW 528i up to 130mph. :)

Fingers is right girls and boys.

I did this when I was 19, young, crazy and reckless, and in those days I enjoyed the odd spot of street racing too.

A few years later I wrote off my own Polo in a very nasty accident (incidentally only at 35mph) and was extremely lucky to walk away alive, let alone completely unharmed. (Luckily the only things harmed were my Polo and a telegraph pole).

When something goes wrong, it can easily go wrong very badly very quickly, and a car you were in control of a split second before becomes a heavy metal box with no control at all.

Speed is tremendous fun, and there are plenty of run what ya brungs and track days to enjoy it safely.

It's a horrible feeling after having been in a crash where nothing was harmed except your car and your pride, but imagine how much worse it would be if there were passengers in your vehicle or someone got in the way of your flying heavy metal box... Not something you want on your conscience.

around 150MPH for me and i was in a toyota supra TT i was only 18 at the time and got a bit to scared to any faster

But if you pulled the wings off a fly it would be a walk - just cos you are in a plane doesn't mean you have to fly - you are still running on land with wheels!

(I'm not really going to win this one am I, so what about a hovercraft? Would that count?)

Hehe, i knew someone would start mentioning aircraft and such things if i wasn't very specific  Looks like it did no good anyway
P.s. I would classify a plane with no wings as a modified aircraft so that won't count, and hovercraft isn't a pure land vehicle so no :p

By the way, do any of you know of a place i can legally and safely drive fast around Birmingham (or Aberystwyth)? Preferably free or very cheap

The biggest problem with breaking the land speed record is keep the thing on the ground in the first place. 313mph is no effort for a plane, but try keeping it down!

That's impressive, even with a worst case 10% error that's still 98mph! I admire your patience. Was the car stock standard at the time?

Rgds,

P.

and patience i had, had 2 power naps... 8)

it was completely stock, only mod was an air mass flow from a larger engine (1.4 sport). that was the day i got a stone chip in the windscreen, was a nasty one too. after i repaired it it was written off! so she went out in style

After a months on this forum your car will soon improve and reach new heights of performance

86 in a ford fiesta mk4 and the whole car started shaking.

ha ha my car sucks.

omg, I have the same car! If you go 80+ it shakes like a girls favourite toy!

Despite that, I got 105 of it downhill :p

Whats a mere 300mph between friends? I will admit to not having a speedo with me at the time but it did feel a bit faster than my car.

ha ha I'll have to try that, I wouldn't dare try nitrous it would blow the damn thing to pieces.

The fastest ive done is 144mph & im not expecting to go any faster.I was on the M1 racing a Lancier Delta.

Looking at your user name I was expecting about 180! Doing those speeds on the Motorway is really reckless and can easily lead to a long ban

I wonder what you'd get on a long straight track

nice one Punck.

I have a mate who got stopped by Thames Valley Police. They alleged he was doing 97mph. In a 1981 Ford Escort Estate 1.1 L. The Police refused to proceed as they truly believed that the car would not be capable of that speed.

Personally I think he deserved two medals. One for getting it up to that speed (which must've taken days) and another for owning the bloody thing in the first place!

How times have changed. WIth VASCAR, Truvelo, LIDAR 2020 etc we have now there's no room for discussion or dispute.

That's where radar jammers, laser diffusers and anti photographic coatings on number plates come in! :D

theres nothing worse than paying out 100 quid for a can of the reflective coating on your number plates, then going to test them only to fine yourself with a hefty fine and points.

would you dare try it out? i reckon that you pay for it and then are too dubious to try it out, thus paying over your cash for a dressed up can of insette hairspray.

its all a con

Fiesta: 110mph (my 1st car)
Focus: 130mph (my dads car)
Clio: 100mph (my mums car - way too slow)
206: 125mph so far (my new car)

Sadly we all get held to ransom being honest road users who pay our tax, insurance etc. We're easy targets.

If every driver who get's letter from the authorities suggesting we were speeding chose to ignore it then the system would fail. Even better - we all reply and ask for the case to be heard by a court.

The postal system would grind to a halt long before anyone even received a summons.

best ive had is 130 (showing 125mph on gps) in ma civic that was just after id got it

condone silly speeds it not worth losing a license for a quick bit of fun
save that for a track
