What is a torque plate

What is a torque plate? It sounds like a lovely lunch doesn't It?

Why would you want to fit a torque plate?
 
A Tq Plate is a thick alloy plate that has the bore holes in it and is torqued onto the block to the head specs to replicate the stresses imposed (when the head is torqued down) that can cause bore distortion before the bores are honed and the motor finally assembled.
