Mums car needs a new purge solenoid apparently.

It seems to be running fine with no warning lights.

What is a purge solenoid and what does it do?

Fuel vapour is quite harmful to human health, especially Benzine which is a known carcinogen. As a fuel tank warms, cools and is shaken around you end up with vapour and pressure.

Rather than venting this to the atmosphere a car will trap fuel vapour and spit this into a warm engine where it can be safely burnt.

The solenoid controls this valve that allows the fuel vapour to enter the engine intake. You only really want this to happen on a warm engine and a solenoid allows a fine control over when this happens. When it fails this valve can stick open or closed.

This can cause starting issues, especially on a warm engine. You generally get a warning light showing on your dashboard or a fault code can be read through the OBDII interface.
