What are throttle bodies

Sorry for asking all the questions but Waynne said to keep on posting them up as a lot of other newbies are also wondering these things. It's also good for a debate and getting as much feedback from as many people as possible to give a rounded out idea of each topic.

So what are throttle bodies?

Are they like mini Carbs for each cylinder? Do you still use fuel injection on them?
 
The butterfly valve that opens and shuts depending on the accelerator position. They can be a single one in the front of the plenum OR individual ones for each cylinder.
Fuel injection is generally into the inlet runners OR into the head ports.
Newer motors now have direct injection into the combustion chambers.
